Default Oil Pump Change

In my usual fashion, I'll make a short story long.

I have a 98 that I believe the oil pump went out on. The oil pressure was fine at highway speed, dropped to 9 psi at idle. I checked the forum and decided to go with easiest first. Started the car to pull into the garage and had zero oil pressure. Changed the Oil pressure sensor again, replaced a year ago and relocated to the Oil filter. Bypassed the cable extension and put the sensor in the factory position and still it reads zero.

What I have gathered so far: Do a cam swap at the same time since most of the labor is duplicated.

First, do I have to raise the engine to replace the pump? Looks like I have to remove thar harmonic balancer but there isn't much clearance. Pretty sure the radiator needs to come out, but it looks like maybe a power steering cylinder is mounted right in front of the pulley?

Second, I bought the car used and don't know much of the history. It has after market air intake and long tube headers that I know of. What cam, if any, should I replace it with? About 95k miles, would like a mild lope but nothing that's going to scare the wife from driving it.

Any detailed instructions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Pretty sure you need to drop the steering rack....get a Katech oil pump...a 230/23X will give you nice lope

Rack needs to be pulled to get the balancer off.

Power steering can stay in but it's easier if you remove it. The bolts connecting the p/s lines to the rack are a pita to get loose.

Clean and locktite any bolts that are behind the timing cover you remove, especially the cam bolts.

Replace the timing chain as well

Go to LS1HowTo.com. There's good info on that site. Use the service manual to torque the rockers. Other than that the pics and info are very helpful.

LS1howto is a good site for that info. I used it for my first cam swap years ago.

The steering rack has to be unbolted and repositioned to the passenger side of the car (Just slide it over). Radiator doesn't have to come out, but I remove the fans to get my 3/4" impact in there to remove the balancer bolt.

Don't use LS1howto for harmonic damper (pulley) removal or installation, unless you want to damage the crank threads.

Steering rack, once removed, can be slid to the passengers side and then move the tie rods such that when moved to the driver's side it can be taken completely out of the car.

PS lines can be reached through the driver's wheel well.

For a cam replacement, radiator must come out.

Default Thanks for the info on the Oil Pump, FAST 102, what do you think?

Thanks for all of the info on the Oil Pump Change. I have a sneaky suspicion that the previous owner may have replaced the cam, since it has a slight lope. So, I'm going to change the oil pump and the timing chain. I just saw the post on FAST 102 Painted intakes. Whats everyone's opinion on what I would gain if I installed on of these?
