I see you have a Z06 so I guess you're thinking about fitting them? The good news is the 02 has the later standard of TPM which is cheaper. From what I read here, the stock TPMs will fit the factory Z06 rims. Apparently, if Z06 reproduction rims state that they are made to OEM specs then the sensors will fit.
The way the system works is that the RFA (radio receiver) is shared with the door lock system. Once the TPM is installed on the car it's trained to tell it where on the car it's sitting. As you run through the training sequence (starting front left and working around, front right rear right rear left) the sensor is identified.
The TPS is dormant until the car is moving (to save battery power). Once it becomes active it sends a signal to the RFA which is sent to the PCM and then on to the DIC to be displayed as a pressure.
Long way to answer your question but they are programmed to the frequency of the RFA and identified by position.

Hmm interesting stuff. I guess that's how aftermarket tpms' work..
