Default Pilot Bearing failures

After the second pilot bearing started going out in a two month period I decided to take my car in to RPM Motors for a fix. I had replace the bearing less then 3k miles ago only to have the same symptoms pop up two weeks ago.

Dropped the car off today for what RPM does to fix the problem. They are going to grind down the imput shaft so they can use a c6 ball bearing in place of the pilot bearing. While they have it open I decided I don't want to deal with the Monster stg 3 six puck any longer as two years was enough. Replacing it will be a Diamond stg 2 full face clutch.I keep hearing great things about from LS1 Tech. Should do fine for my 450whp. New TT bushings and bearings going in while we are in there as well. I will let every one know how this works and how the new clutch feels as I know not many vette guys are running them yet.

Im am in the process of drivetrain mods. I am installing a new SPEC duel disk clutch, throwout bearing remote bleeder and PILOT BEARING. I wasnt going to change the piolt but decided to do so. THANK GOD that I did!

The OEM one had 55,000 miles on it. It never gave me any issues BUT, once it was removed, I found that the grease in the bearing was very deteriorated and hard and one of the roller bearing needles fell out once it was out.

I found that using a little heat on the crank hub prior to attempting to extract the old one helped getting the old one out.

Any idea what was causing the pilot bearings to fail????

What in the bearing failed???

Nope no idea why its failing but Charlie says that this is a much better alternative to the pilot bearing with the needle bearings. Could be a lot of things, Thats why I'm basically doing a TT rebiuld while there in there. Also this Mod with the Ball bearing looks to be a stronger option then the needle bearings. I trust them they have been the ones working on my car for the last year and all is well with there work!

I'm going to use a pilot bushing next time. Screw the bearing.

I'm ignorant so I will ask the question. What are the signs of pilot bearing failure?

I will likely be doing my clutch in the spring and I'm planning on replacing everything.

mine started making a nasty grinding noise as i released the clutch pedal. Also shifting was much harder.

Often times, the bearing is damaged by the R&R. Put the input shaft in with much missalignment and bearing damage will occure.
