I'm an OEM type person for the most part so personally, I would stay with whatever the engineers deemed appropriate for the car. I won't say that it won't work using a 145amp but maybe someone else in here has tried it and can chime in.

I have a 98 with the 145A alternator but I also have a 2002 PCM in the car.
Some people have made the swap and not had any problems but others get a charge system fault.
According to Evil Twin AKA ET a former design engineer for the C5 you must use the OEM alternator or you will get the charge system fault.

12.5 with a volt meter or on your IPC? While engine is running?

With everything proper, you should be seeing between 13.8 and 14.1 as a nominal.

Tony
I'll have to check my readings.....when it stops raining.
Do you still get the, "charge system fault" reading on the DIC?
Are all these scenario's at idle or at speed? Sounds like you are checking them at idle.
Did you purchase the Valero, made in France, part number 10246634? This is the only alternator that has the built in monitor circuit that will work in our year car. (Bill Curlee, Evil Twin)
I really hope you get this straightened out, I hate it when I can't drive my car.

This should help. The 97-98 Schematics should be the same:

There are critical voltages that must be present for the alternator to work properly. Without doing voltage testing,, this will get expensive real quick!

There are some critical connections and wireing on the starter solenoid that effect alternator operation. CHECK THAT before you get too far into this issue.
