Default Steering Lock

I have a 2004-Z06 with 6 speed manual. Whenever I start the vette, the message "Steering Column Locked" is displayed on the readout. I hit the reset to get rid of it, the other read outs work fine. The dealer (not a chevy dealer) is very knowlable, says that his 2009 does to, he told me not a worry about it. The local mech. said that it will start but you never know when the column will actually lock. He wants over $200 to put a by-pass in. I called chevy and they said that there were no recalls on this but they have always had this problem. I don't want to guess what they would charge to fix it.
Any ideas???

So you either have some GM recall and/or a CLB installed-YOU need to figure out which.

Default Service Lock

Just got done talking to GM. They did a more in-depth reseacrch than my local chevy dealer. According to the research, there was a recall and the previous owner had the unit serviced. I guess they didn't fix it completly but the recall was closed and anymore work would be done at my expense. My electrical guy said they probably bypassed the locking mech. (which I no longer have) so the lock up or fuel shut off should not occur. I just have to put up with that message being displayed. I just hit reset and it goes away. Thanks for the help and feedback.
