Default What makes a great header?

Here at Pfadt Racing we're considering putting our engineering resources and racing experience toward developing a high performance exhaust. Help us determine what YOU want from a header package by picking your "top 3" from the list above, and feel free to add your own ideas in your post below!

What have you liked about headers you've installed in the past, and what have been your biggest frustrations?

TRI-Y merge collector design. Put the x- pipe as far back, right before the bump over the rear axle, not up by the cats.

slip fit, smooth connections.

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't the X-pipe work better the closer it is to the headers...

I think the most important factor is material selection. I always like to buy the most reliable parts.

I have a set of QTP Tri-Y headers. Excellent fit and quality. I have since removed them and tried others, some of which are touted for their performance. The QTP's gave me 35 lb-ft more torque at mid-range than others and are obviously still on the car (now permanently). I think they knew something considering the stock manifolds were also a Tri-Y design. Food for thought.

the farther back the x-pipe the more torque produced

thanks for the replies so far, this kind of end-user feedback is exceptionally helpful

A tri-Y design has a lot of benefits, but the additional collectors can drive up costs. Would a wider torque band from a tri-Y be worth the additional money for most of you guys?

I'm with these guys. If I could find a set I would buy them, been looking for a while with no luck.

Top three
1. choice of material ( S.S.--coated or uncoated)
2. fitment
3. engineered collector "merge area" (cone shape or design)

4. thickness of flange and thickness of header tubes

And you have tested this yourself?
I believe the makers of header and X pipes will disagree with you.

YES - moved the x-pipe from right behind the high flow cats to just before the axle bend. pick up a few ft lbs in torque

X-pipe design makes a difference too.

and LG puts their X-pipe as far back as possible IIRC

Challenge with the Tri-Y is fit under the car. Not always easy to do.

yes I would spend more for a Tri-Y and Jet Hot coated header.

From what I can see cost is the major factor for most buyers... most claim to be USA made regardless of where the stainless comes from.

Are people complaining due to where the SS is produced, where the manufacturing takes place, both?

I think the reality is, most guys do not complain(or care) where the materials are produced, or where the headers are assembled........UNLESS....they experience problems.

True enough. Some people care but for the most part no one really cares when they are saving money

what did you guys love or hate about previous headers you've installed? Anything that really made the job a lot harder? No need to name names if you don't want to.

The "Corvette tax" imposed on all parts used on a Corvette--Typical headers for a similiar eng on a camaro run from $250-$450 but say Corvette and suddenly basically the same headers are $800 to $1200
!!!!!!!!!!!!
