Noticed after driving a burning oil smell. Checked the oil filter & plug everything seemed snug. Noticed oil in the general area of the filter, went adhead and changed out the filter. Thought that I might have had a bad seal on the filter.
Test drove and looked again I could see new oil building up on the metal. I am convinced its not the filter ,but leaking some where above this area. I done alot of DYI on this 99 frc but this is probably out of my league unless it something to just tighten up.
No mechanic by any means, please reply if you have experienced this very thing or have and ideal of what the problem is or cost involved to fix.

Thank you
One can only speculate where the oil is coming from. If you want to find the origin, clean the oily area with simple green, and wipe down. Buy some engine oil dye at a local auto parts store, and check the area with a black light after a short drive.

There's a small housing above the filter that the oil temperature sensor fits into. The housing has a gasket and is attached by two bolts. So, oil leak could be at that gasket, or at the oil temperature sensor.

I've seen oil leak from the oil PSI spending unit behind the intake in back of the engine by the fire wall. Good luck
I have had TWO major oil leaks on my ZO6. The first was a BAD harmonic damper seal and that soaked the entire lower portion of the engine and part of the under body.
Second; The Oil Pressure Sender relocation adapter went bad and I had a leak just where you are seeing yours.
Use a MIRROR and look down behind the engine up high and the area where the bell housing meats the engine. You can see the Oil Pressure Sensor in this picture:
Just like Lucky recommended,, until you remove ALL the old oil and properly monitor where you see it originate from,, its a guessing game.
Get the car up on jack stands and idle it till you see the point of origin!
I got rid of the relocation kit and put it back to stock!
The attached photo shows the oil temp sending unit (#7). These are known to sometimes leak out the electrical connection, though, in most cases it is a slow small leak. As already stated above by Bill and Lucky, it could be your oil pressure sending unit too, but you need to get the area clean to see where it's coming from.

Reason: Bill faster than me ;-)
my experience with a leak in that area turned out to be the oil pan, they are not prone to leaking but mine and my friends vette both leaked from the pan, between the block and the pan. Clean it up and check it out
Well check out the oil sensor, oil around -pulled the cap off and tightened up the sensor. The little rubber piece on the sensor wire seemed a little out of shape. Shaped it up best as I could and replaced.
I guess oil could leak from this also right? Hoping for the best but I believe this was probably it. Going to clean up the oil on bottom and go for a test drive.
Thanks alot guys the forum has saved me a ton of dough over the years.

The sensor itself will leak when bad. Over torquing the sensor is a sure way to expect a failure of the sensor. It shouldn't be any tighter than 15 ft-lbs.
Well like a dumb *** I should have took a look before putting the windsheild cowl back together. Major brain fart, I thought for sure after tighting the sensor a little that would have done the trick. Hind -sight I think the electrical rubber plug might be bad also. It looked worn out and out of shape.
Any body know the part number for the sensor electrical plug, I figure
I'll replace it along with the sensor.
This is my typical DYI project, it always turns out that I do it twice.
Problem was the pigtail that attaches to the oil pressure sensor. Was slowly seeping out oil dripping down below.
My pigtail was shot as well. Also, the plastic housing the pigtail plugged into eventually cracked. Given that chain of events, you may wish to consider just replacing the sensor. $.02
