Default Rebuilt Rear and Experiences

I am about to bring my vette in for rear end work. Planning on going to Cartek in Garwood NJ. The question is how can I be assured the rear doesn't go out again? Anyone have experince with Cartek? And why would the rear go out in the first place.

Thanks for the input.

I would buy a new diff if available or Factory reman.

If the depth of pinion is set incorrect you will have whine / hum.

If the ring gear side clearance is set incorrect you will have clunk when shifting F to R.

You must have a nice tooth pattern in center of ring gear from proper seating of the pinion.

Reusing old gears and shims will not insure you have correct settings.

These are critical.

If you can get reman set by factory that is the way I would go.

This does NOT mean you won't get a good rebuild but I have seen many shops do this type of rebuild and then after have a hum/whine and say. "this is normal break in".

It IS NOT NORMAL!. There should be no more noise on a rebuilt than a new one. Don't accept any noise that wasn't there previous.

The only bad thing is there is no way to quantify how much noise on a rebuild is NORMAL.

For noise it will be your word against theirs. So be sure you take the right steps to insure a quality rebuild.

Can you elaborate on the problem?

The car runs great. The whine has turned into a hum. Cartek will rebuild for $1,500. The dealer will swap out for $3,000. Both come with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. The question is why did this happen and will it happen again?

I don't think anyone can answer the questions you've posed without any relevant details. Maybe ask Cartek once they disassemble your rear? There's lots of things that could have gone wrong and you can only give an accurate diagnosis once you've taken it apart.

WOW!

If you have a STOCK rear and it had ISSUES, putting in another STOCK rear may solve the issue but IF,,, you’re driving style KILLS rear ends, you need to get a hardened rear with the proper upgraded parts.

Best way to do that is to have a qualified shop build your rear to match your driving style and car usage criteria. (i.e. Drag race, auto cross, aggressive street driving, ect.....)

I put C6 ZO6 parts in mime to get to the next level without breaking the bank.

Before anyone can fully answer your questions, you need to provide a LOT more info.

Mileage on car??
Past service done to the rear??
Driving Style??
Eng HP/Tq??
Suspension Mods??
Goals??
CASH on hand / available for repairs/mods??
etc....................

Very valid point! What failed in the current installed rear???????????????? 100% Agree!!

IMO 4:10 gearing will increase your RPM at 70 mph by about 800 and cut fuel mileage by 9 mpg. Your acceleration will be way faster but your top end will probably drop by 25 mph. Just my opinion of course.

WOW. The rpms I can find on some charts, but the 9 mpg drop? So on the highway cruising along in 6th gear, I get 31 MPG would now drop me to 22 MPG? I didn't think it would be that much.

My 98 A4 with 4.10's only lost 1.5 MPG on the highway but was still 26+

Not even close. I am running a heads/cam package with big tires and 4.10s and I get 26-27 on the highway.

IDK about a 9mpg loss. I was still getting 24mpg on the hwy in my heavier, much more powerful Camaro with 4.11s. I don't know if its even that bad with an A4.

Thanks all. Call me a *ussy but I'm going to compromise with 3.90s. Hopefully I'l bring it Saturday. If all goes well I'll pick up my Triumph Sprint ST, bring it home and bring the vette in on the same day. Cha-ching!
