Are you concerned with the SMOG visual and having LT's?
of course.
My registration required a smog for 2012. My reg date is Feb 2012. You can smog a car 90 days prior to the due date - which is what I did - before any of these changes. So I don't have to worry about smog till Feb 2014.
I've heard the LT sometimes pass depending on the shop. The cam was chosen specifically due to it's ability to pass emissions testing. As much as smog is a PITA, I personally can't stand that unburned hydrocarbon smell. I'd rather have lower HP than a smelly race car.
Now that I've done it, changing the headers & H pipes back to stock wouldn't really be that difficult. I could do it in a day. The only thing I need is a 2001 + passenger manifold. (due to the change in the air tube location)
I've also heard that the whole smog inspection process is going to change in 2013 to something competely different. Apparantly the smog program hasn't really been all that successful in minimizing pollution per dollar spent. 99% of people leave their stock car completly alone. Making everyone blow $75 to verify this is true is not an efficient pollution prevention program.
Do they run you on the rollers doing a drive cycle and sniff the tailpipe?
They did that here for some time then came to the same conclusions and eliminated the the whole deal.
All OBD2 cars are now plugged into and the readiness monitirs checked and away you go.
How far from the header collector are the cats? Does the smell go away after everything is hot?
The stock cats aren't exactly right up next to the manifold.
I have used more than a few aftermarket cats on cars in the stock location and they seem to last about 2 years. There is a reason the stockers cost a lot more than the aftermarket stuff.
My particular 2000 is a non-California, Federal emission car without the pup cats shown in Bill's photo above. The blue 2002 is a CA car and looks identical to the photo.
The reason for the 2001 AIR tubes is the location of the fitting on the headers I bought.
