I've read many publications suggesting drilling of the lifter trays. To my knowledge, nobody has provided any concrete information that this helps, or hurts, the engine in any way. I personally haven't done it.. and I don't plan to do it.. but I'm not going to insinuate to others they are idiots because they take the advice of many more credible people than someone hiding behind a forum name and avatar.
In any event, let's not derail this guy's build thread any longer. The anti-drillers already made their point... let it go.
Then why did you do it? I find it interesting, that you make a modification(that is quite baseless) to the lifter trays, and completely ignore applying RTV to the knock sensor covers.
You can only hope
Just in case what? What are you expecting, that thousands of other C5 owners(with more extensive modifications) are seemingly unconcerned about?
I have already mentioned why I drilled the holes in previous posts; for oil drain back. I have heard of oil accumulating in the trays and foaming causing a chance to starve the pan. Drilling holes avoids the chance of this.
From this book: "How to build High-Performace Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8's:"
"A good trick to improve the oil control in a hot rod Gen III V-8 is to drill these 1/2-inch drain holes in the lower face of the lifter retainer trays above each lifter. On a production engine, having engine oil pooling here is acceptable, but on a high-rpm engine, having oil lying around only costs you power and causes the oil to foam and get hot."
and more.
How likely is this to become a problem? I am not sure. But I drilled. Yes - structurally they should be fine, the holes are small and I did not impact the inner support ribs in anyway therefore it will hold up ok. And yes - I stated exactly as you quoted that countless others do not drill and are completely fine. Vice versa, I have seen MANY people drill and have no problems as well.
I know many will disagree and many will agree but in the end this was my decision. I'm not saying there is a right or a wrong - I'm just saying it's an option and I chose to do it. Thanks

Thanks man. I really didn't think this was such a big deal to have "anti-drillers" come out who felt so strongly about this lol. I've worked on a few Camaro's and T/A's with friends and some have drilled - some didn't. I chose to drill since even though the positive may not be set in stone, I did not see any negatives about it. No big deal.
Time to get back out in the garage and try to wrap up this little electrical problem.
Hey guys! Just wanted to let you all know I solved my electrical problem.
I checked and cleaned both Grounds (G104 and G106) and I checked, cleaned, and re-tightened the connections on the starter. That seemed to do the trick! Both codes went away! I'm going to give the car a nice wash tomorrow and take her for a short conservative drive. Then I'll let her sleep over night and I'll be taking her on a more thorough cruise Friday and Saturday. I'll also try to get a good quality start up video so you guys can listen in .
Looks like I'll enjoy my Vette for a while this weekend

So it doesn't sound like you actually found a problem.......the codes just went away?

Actually Ground G106 was a little loose. I never unbolted it but when I went to clean it I noticed it wasn't torqued down that tight. There was a very little amount of corrosion on it so I just cleaned it, bolted it back up to the block, and tightened it down snugly. Once I did that the codes went away so I believe that was my issue.
BUT for safe keeping - I cleaned and re-tightened ALL the connections between the Alt, Starter, PCM, and Battery so I can avoid this problem in the future .
I miss something, is there a video posted of it running since the build?
Lol nope you didn't miss it man. I'm planning on doing a video this weekend. I've been really busy at work so I haven't had a chance. Stay tuned - it'll be up shortly!

Any doubt That's 2 this week, one of which I'll be there for tomorrow I'm sure that will find it's way here

Initial measurements in post #89 made little sense, and the "fix" makes absolutely no sense. Some people don't need an understanding of the "how and why". If they stumble on a fix, and things just start working, then it's all good to them. I'm not built that way......but hey.......it's not my car.

So what are you thinking it is? I know I have read a lot about those codes being sent because of a bad Alternator, or connection to it.

Well - the ground was a bit loose and was the one thing that stood out to me BUT like I said I went through everything:
- BATT Terminal on the Alternator
- Ignition wire & both power wires on the starter (to the battery and to the starter)
- Both grounds (G104 & G106)
- The connections to the PCM
Every connection that I could clean - I cleaned. I also reseated and tightened ALL the connections. So it's very possible that if the ground wasn't my fix (now that you mention it it doesn't make much sense) then one or more of the other tasks I completed did the trick. I didn't mention it but I did find some corrosion on the power connection on the starter - some rubbing alcohol did the job and that could have very well been my fix (makes more sense). Would I like to know specifically? Definitely - but it's gone so all I can do is wait and see if it comes back. I usually hate it when I am trying to troubleshoot something and all of a sudden it works and I don't have a clear answer why. It sucks even more when I am trying to find the fix for something I'm not great at (electrical) lol I'm trying to learn though so give me some slack . Thanks for the help though man.

I'll get a video up no worries lol. I planned on last weekend and I actually took a video but it sounded terrible and I just didn't want to post it up. I have another camera which is a bit nicer so hopefully that can the job done.
