Default Starter solenoid / Heat wrap

I think my starter went, or more specifically the solenoid. It engages the flywheel for split second and then disengages and just spins. I had the top end of the engine off, doing a heads and cam upgrade - might have soaked it with antifreeze - or the headers baked it.

Is the solenoid available separately from the starter?

Anyone use starter heat shield wrap? any opinions on it if so?

Thanks!

You might want to check your main wires going to the starter as well. That was my problem, they were melted and causing a bad ground. I wrapped everything in high temp tape and have a starter shield now. Although I had this problem because my headers aren't coated or wrapped and the heat coming off them is terrible.

In regards to the solenoid, you should be able to find one seperate if you dig around. If you're looking for something new or a reman, the only ones I found came with the starter only.

damn. I have the same exact problem right now (LTs toasted the solenoid and wires). I was hoping to just pick up a new solenoid without the starter...

Do you think the starter shield and tape will be enough? Or do you think the long tubes need to be coated or wrapped?

Have a link or manufacturer for the starter shield and tape?

Thanks

The starter solenoid IS available seperately.

Its around $50. I got mine from a starter / alternator repair place. \

There are replacements at AZ and advance but, some have said it a C6 design and you will have to convert the PURPLE wire to a C6 design connector that snaps onto the solenoid terminal. (Not a big deal but something to understand that needs to be changed)

I made my own heat shield out of thermal canvas used for steam pipes. Its a high temp canvas that coated with silver foil. It works very well!

That would not be the solenoid causing the issue it would be the starter drive gear.
Used to be a common problem with starters.

Thanks for the tip! I'll go pick up some thermal canvas tomorrow, along with a new starter solenoid.

Thanks for the offer. I'll keep that in mind, in case I can't find a solenoid locally...

They do make heat shield /wraps for starters.. they are slightly more attractive, although being under the car no one really sees them

Do you sell em? If so, what's my price (shipped to Los Angeles) for a repeat customer (bought some plugs/wires recently) ?
