Default Torque Tube troubles

Hi everyone. I posted a thread with a video a few weeks ago about a grinding noise coming from somewhere inbetween the crank and the trans....
Well after dropping down the transmission (PITA), and pulling off the clutch assembly and slave cylinder i realized that the problem was not in the front. So I then removed the torque tube from the transmission and low and behold I saw what was causing the problem. All the splines in the female splined flange that sits in the rear bearing assembly that mates with the spline off of the transmission were ground to dust. The rubber couplers are cracked too. The transmission spline seems alright. I don't have a clue why this happened?

I thought that it would be easy to find a new splined flange online, but i cannot, and the dealer said that part is not a "serviceable" part, so they don't have a number or anything. Does anyone know where i can get a new or used flange from?

i will post some pics once i find out how to.

thanx

I have a torque tube out of a 2000 6spd. with 12,000 miles. Let me know if you are interested. I am changing to the larger torque tube and won't need the original. I'll give you a great price.

Thanx, Rick @RKT56.

Does anyone know what might have caused the spline to disintegrate, and the coupler to break?

That guy is running a 12mm Z06 TT with RPM Poly bushinigs now. I'd hate to see how much money he has in that car.

LOL! RPM poly bushings... Ok, I need to place those on my 'wish list' for the future. 12mm vs. 10mm. Good upgrade! You and your new 'toys'.

As far as the coupler, age is the biggest factor. 12-13 years can take their toll on any rubber component. Why the spline went bad is anyone's guess. Fretting is the most likely in my opinion. Where in the US has the car spent most of its days?

If you have eve taken the trans off the tube before you can see that most of them have a rusty powder on the splines from fretting. I always clean up the splines and might add a light grease coating.

I subscribe to the while you are there theory. Check the pilot bearing, clutch, slave and master too. Throw in a remote bleeder as well.

All the best
