Default Pinpointing annoying noise?

I have a noise that seems to be coming from below my car. At first I thought it was a bad cat rattling. Now using the hose trick to pinpoint the noise, it seems to be coming from the access hole at the end of the torque tube near the engine. After pulling the hole plug, its louder in there. Anyone have any input on this? Any help is appreciated. I'm starting to get really frustrated with the whole thing. I'm not really sure what I'm looking at inside the rubber plug..flywheel/flexplate? Is this balanced with weights? Thanks all!

This is one of the suggestions that I got, plus a person you can get those sensors on ebay for 30.00 if that is your problem too.

If you have an A4 you may have a broken flex plate you need to get a good look in there to see if it's broken.

Checked the flexplate today. No cracks and all the bolts were tight. I did see a couple "scuffs" in the bellhousing area...
Sorry, with the lighting this is the best pics I could take. Could it be something with the starter?

Sounds like the propeller shaft hub clamp needs adjusting. It needs to be loosened, and then;

Start and run the engine at idle until normal operating temperatures are reached.

Idle or drive for at least 10 minutes.

Turn off the engine and allow the powertrain to cool to ROOM temperature.

Raise the vehicle.

Tighten the propeller shaft hub clamp bolt to 125 N·m (93 lb ft)

You can find the details in the service manual.

Thank you Eric, but what do you think the manual means by loosen? I would think loosening it too much, it would just slip? I appreciate your help!

It has a spline, so no it won't slip in rotation, but it will move fore/aft as it grows from thermo expansion. This manual step sets it to a neutral point so that it doesn't put load on the flex plate. The noise it makes is like a rattle when not adjusted properly.

I did this procedure twice and it seems to make a worse rattle. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

can you make the noise change from P to N to D(brake on)?

Sounds like your on the right track, I've never seen an A4 making the noise you have there, my dad had a '98 with over 220,000 miles, never did that

let us know what you find

^no, I have the noise P/N/Red light w/ foot on brake. Any thing over say 1k rpm its gone. It's more prominent now in P and N after "adjusting the propeller shaft hub clamp". Thanks

Check all engine and trans mounts. Seems when you increase rpm, the resulting torque is removing the nosie. So, get car up safety/secure and run see if you can see the driveline flex. Next would be the torque tube.

The issue has nothing to do with "resulting torque". It is a resonant issue. Engine pulsation in the right frequency range will light-off the resonance. The resonance has to do with the transdiff and part of the reason all C5's have a 58Hz tuned absorber mounted on the left diff side cover. Peek resonant point is 870 rpm.
