The service manual says: "using the J 36221 depress the white circular ring......." Well I tried that no luck, tried every other suggestion on the forum site. I finally got it loose with a tool my dad had in his tools.
This is a small engine valve spring compressor tool.
Adjust the fingers on the white circualr ring end to just cover the ring, not the gold colored connector which has to come out. Adjust the fingers on the other end to contact the back of the female part of the coupling. Then just a little pressure from the compression screw.. not much. Wiggle the coupling a bit and poof, apart!
I tried everything (two days worth) and finally with two small screwdrivers popped it apart in a couple of minutes. I like the small engine valve spring compressor idea, have to remember that if there is ever a "next time".
