Default Column Lock

I got the column lock today and it won't reset. Funny thing was I was picking it up from the dealer when it happened. They all looked at each other and unofficially recommended that I just buy the bypass kit. I could tell they are very frustrated with the problem on these cars and don't want to waste my time or money getting GM to fix the problem. My kit comes in today, but I read that if you already have an existing fault, it won't work.

Mine has the plate removed apparently because even with it locked I can move the wheel. I'm going to follow the instructions and remove fuse 25 for 10 minutes to try and reset it. Hopefully it will work.

I am impressed with the fact the dealer told you to get the bypass!

For what it's worth, I had the exact same problem. My plate had been removed and I suddenly started getting the message years later on my 04 starting a few months ago. Strange thing is, my battery has been going out and I have been putting off replacing it. I changed it out yesterday and the column lock messages stopped, don't know how they're realted but they must be.

There is much written on this subject. The battery condition plays a big role with the column lock.

I got the bypass installed and it works again. I did have to remove the K harness cited in the instructions. At first I didn't know it was there, but it wouldn't work with it in place.

fyi, even with the bypass if your battery gets low it can still cause a problem. I had it happen to me.
