I have a PB UD balancer to install. It has a keyway in it.
If I were to pin this, would I pin right where the key way is, or chose a different location in order to let the drill hit metal on both sides?
Or is it even necessary to pin the aftermarket units?
Always pin any balancer on these engines, since you already have the balancer with a key way.
So do it the right way and use the SLP setup that puts the pin perpendicular to the crank.
The other way is a hack job........

Ok, first ime I have heard of this. The balancer is actually from SLP, but made by PB.
I shall go look at the SLP site.
Ok, so who makes a kit for doing it this way. there is nothing on the SLP site that I could find.

I did a google search and that is what I came up with as well.
Spendy!
Maybe Printman or Vettenuts will rent me theirs?
I know what you mean! I'm sure that at some point, I'll have to replace my balancer, and not pinning it would be pretty foolish. But to spend $130 for a kit that I'll most likely use only once....that would be even more foolish!
sorry I don't have mine anymore. You can find them used here and on LS1Tech all the time. If you can't find one used just buy a new one then sell it. They bring $85-$90 used.
you want the ATI pinning kit that pins on the side
If you want to go cheap, then just drill a hole in the side of the crank and drive a short pin into it. That's basically what the kit does except it has a fixture to make the pin square into the crank. If you're careful you can get drill it straight enough by hand. I can't remember the diameter of the pin but try to make it the same diameter as the keyway thickness.

Peter
the ATI kit comes with a drill bit smaller than the pin. Comes with a reamer to ream the hole to a perfect tight fit for the pin. You get what you pay for here
I think I may have asked this question before, but just for the sake of clarity, I'll ask again. Can the ATI fixture be used "on the car", by removing nothing more than the OE balancer? In other words, can you leave the engine's front cover, water pump, alternator, p/s pump, a/c compressor, etc, all in place, get the fixture properly located, and still get a drill in there?
Thanks all. I will just buy a new one from Summit plus extra pins so I can sell it complete when done.
You know, WTF! The Visa card already needs water cooling from this project.

I hate getting the "cliff notes" on a somehat complicated job, only to find out half way through the job, some "minor" detail, like having to remove the engine from the car was actually step 1 or 2, and left out of the notes......
