Default Cam install timing gear dot issue?

doing cam and heads down to the timing well we set the right first piston to tdc (we think) and the timing dots line up but one dot is at the top of the gear and the other is at the bottom instead of meeting up? we havent taken it apart yet now these are perfectly lined up just all the pics show them meeting and lining up instead of it being at the top of the timing gear lined up and not touching the oil pump gear or whatever

so now what do i do turn it til they meet and line up touching and re install my new cam or what?

You dont need to worry about setting a piston to TDC and the position of the dots before the disasembly. Its 180 degrees off now. Just rotate the crank so the dot is at the 12 o'clock position when you get to the part where you are putting the timing chain back on. If you are also replacing the oil pump you are going to have to remove the lower sprocket. Its keyed and only goes on in the correct position.

It doesn't matter if the cam dot is up or down, as long as they are lined up when you re-install. Again, on re-installation, the cam dot can be at 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock but its easier to see alignment at the 6 o'clock position.

However, if you are degreeing the cam then #1 has to be at TDC on the firing stroke.

I took a picture of mine and then laid out a line to make sure that it went thru the center of the pulley.
