I seriously doubt your problem is the convertor.Since 2nd gear at this time seems to be your issue,it is most likely internal trans issues.Prob time for a rebuild.

Sounds like you have first and third and probably no OD. Thats probably a broken sun gear shell. That means a trans rebuild. What ever you do, don't put in a new converter and try it. There will be pieces of debris in the trans fluid. First thing to do is drop the trans pan and look at the magnet on the pan for metal pieces the size of a bb.

Good luck

Trans is coming out to get cleaned/gone through and inspected. Figured I'd kill two birds with one stone while its out and go ahead and put a T/C in it.

Remember to flush all the lines and radiator. You should probably install a trans cooler if your going to put in a high stall converter.

Good luck.

The next thing I would check is the filter. There have been some posts in the past where it was found that the filter itself had developed a leak and when tested out of the transmission, would not hold vacuum.

You can do an impromptu vacuum test by closing off the bottom intake of the filter with your hand and sucking on the discharge tube part of the filter that plugs into the transmission.

Just ordered a Trans cooler, currently in the middle of a deal on picking up a Yank 3600 Converter. Ill have the transmission inspected, and Ill pop in a new filter, with some new fluid If everything works out. Just hope its a clogged valve body ... Thanks to those who chimed in!! It might be a while, but Ill let yall know what happens....Maybe Ill do a good right up on pulling the transmission with Pic by Pic steps

BTW, car recently hit 106K miles if anyone is wondering. So I suppose it wouldn't hurt to "freshen" everything up a bit.

100+K miles on a sports car trans is probably a good run.

Well, I started tearing into the Vette on Friday like I had planned. Unfortunately, I lacked the extra hand I needed, so I ended up having to pull it out myself (with the help of a friend spotting me in case the car were to slip off the stands). Anyways, not bad for only being 17 years of age , however, I do recommend having 3 people when guiding the unit out of the car, everything else can be done by one set of hands. Last night I broke the torque tube away from the transmission, and tomorrow Ill break the diff away. Hopefully I can find a shop to inspect the transmission for me sometime this week, and if all goes well and the new torque converter comes in, Ill be putting her back together within the next couple weeks.
Just to clear things up: The car was not only being pulled apart because of transmission issues, but for a torque converter swap too!! The transmission issue just gives me a reason to do it sooner. Everything was gonna come out sooner or later anyways. Plus, like stated before, with over 105k miles, now is not a bad time to get it all rebuilt.
Here is a link to some of the photos I took during the whole process.

17! Sheesh. I didn't even have a car when I was 17.

Thanks for the photos. Is there a particular reason you removed the torque tube? Once done with my H/C/I/H mods, the trans faces me next. Also for a converter. But also to upgrade to a later beefed trans and a 3.42 diff.

And, like you, I will be doing this on the garage floor. Oh boy.

I was like you at 17. Except there is no way I could afford a Vette. My project was a Vega GT with a 454. I did have a pick up to drive as well. That was a long time ago though. Have fun while you are young. You won't have time later.

I agree! However people do tend to give me a hard time for what I drive, and play blind to all the work I have put in. After all, it is a first year and high mileage c5.

Got the transmission back! Looks like I blew the band for 2nd and 4th gear. Also, unexpectedly the new torque converter (Yank, 3600 Stall) arrived!! So while working off and on today, I managed to assemble most of the drive line. Tomorrows goal is to mate the transmission to the diff, then next weekend the rest of the car goes together. Hopefully back on the road by next Sunday.

Did they add any heavy duty parts to keep it from breaking again?
Who did the work?

Don Hardy made a sub frame kit to do it back in the day. I was young and had to have it. It handled like crap but went fast in a straight line.

Haha not really. I just found it easier to work on as one unit, and yeah, its gonna be a WHOLE LOTTA FUN trying to do it on the floor, but its doable by your self, just nice to have extra hands around when it all has to come out from under the car.
