Default K&N Installation Question

I'm putting the 57 Series on my 03. My question is for anyone else who has installed one on there car. When making the cuttout for the flap on the lower radiator cover it seems that the directions say to make the flap opening on the top with the flap going in towards the radiator. This seems to me to be bass ackwards. You would think that the flap would be at the bottom to catch air coming in from below. The tech who kinda new what he is talking about says to cut it at the top and face it in. Can anybody tell me what way they did theirs. Come on Mr. Bill, I think you may have this set up. Thanks in advance.

Default Here's why.....

The reason why they specify cutting the lower radiator cover that way is because the brackets and cover plastic they are connected to would be prone to failure, should you face the opening toward the incoming air flow. I looked at the setup on K&N's web page before buying a Halltech Stinger and then creating my own air scoop to direct air past the filter. Initially, I machined a scoop out of a solid plate of PVC but later used a polycarbonate "wall pocket" that I bought at Staples (based upon a member's suggestion). The wall pocket, when secured to the lower radiator cover with both screws and 3M VHB tape along the flange surface, is much stronger than the lower radiator cover with just a small bracket. You can see my procedure, here:

The K&N will still draw in some cold air, just not nearly as much as my setup does.

How much is 'not nearly as much'? Curious as I have the same K&N on my 04. It was more difficult to install than it should have been or at least what I expected. Hopefully I get SOME benefit from it.

The online instructions for the K&N cutout show the opening at the top. In your diagram it appears that your pocket is open at the bottom. Am I correct or am I looking at it wrong. Thanks for the help.

The best way to check is the same way I did - with a CAR CHIP data logger that plugs into the OBII connector under the steering wheel. While I didn't compare the K&N to my setup, I did compare intake air temps between no cold air mods and temps after my mod. The ambient temp and driving route were identical. Without my mod, intake air temp reached 140F in stop & go/slow moving traffic. After my mods, the temps never exceeded 100 or so on an 80 degree day. There was also a significant difference in recovery time, once the traffic light turned green and vehicle speed to 70 ensued. Without my mod, intake air temps never came back down to ambient, even after 15 minutes on the highway. With my mod, temps went from 100 to 80 in a few minutes.

Since you're already running a K&N FIPK, I recommend that you core the fog light panels and install Z06 screens. Your intake air temps will surely drop.

That is correct. My air scoop channels high-pressure air directly at the filter from the lower part of the cover. I've had my car up to 140 MPH with no problems.
