Default Blackwing installation question

I just purchased a new Blackwing for my 99 coupe and will be installing it next week.

Instructions call for drilling a 3/4" hole for the AIR hose connection next to the existing hole used for the Filter Indicator. Question: Do the Filter Indicatiors really work, do I really need it, or can I eliminate drilling another hole and use the existing Filter Indicator hole for the AIR hose connection?

I would say follow the directions to make sure you get your moneys worth. Also, I would suggest to modify the radiator shroud to bring in outside air. I know some people dont like the idea of cutting a hole in the shroud, I can tell you from personal/current experience, the Blackwing is much more effective bringing in cold air through the shroud. I modified my shroud and the perormance is on par or better than most other CAIs (Honker,Vararam, etc). Also you can pick uyp a used shroud through the parts section of the forum, swap meets, etc, to either modify that shroud or to keep as a spare in case you want to go back to stock. Im saying this because the Blackwing wont perform any better than any other CAI without the shroud being modified.

Installed mine two weeks ago. The diameter of the plastic elbow on the air pump inlet is 3/4", but test fitting it in the 3/4" factory hole for the indicator was not an airtight fit. The inside diameter of the factory grommet for this hose is 1". I cut a 1" hole next to the indicator hole and used grommets on both. It was tight and I had to notch one of the grommets to make them fit next to each other in the space available, but it was doable. Also had to cut the intake hose back to make it work--as it comes it was a 180 degree bend and you only need 90. I didn't open up the shroud since I have Z06 grills and a plate grill and figure I've got enough cool air in there.
