Default Brake question..........help quick

Hi all,
I'm right in the midst of my new rotor/pad job and have a question. I got some very thin, vinyl-looking things that look like they have sticky material on one side and black vinyl on the other......what are they?
Also, I got some black stuf(lube?) in a small tube inside the brake pad pkg.....what is this stuff for? My brake pads are AC Delco stocks from Fitchner. Help?

I'm not sure what the vinyl thing is, but when I put new pads in the rear on my old Vette, the instructions with the pads said to put the lube on the back of the pad. I think the lube is to prevent the pads from seizing to the pressure plate behind it. Make sure you don't get lube on the rotors or the front of the pad.

Hi all,
Thanks for the reply, Mark. I think the stuff in the package is graphite powder or something that looks like a black powder. Any ideas anyone? I figured out the vinyl thingies, they are padding(?) for the back of the fixed side brake pad.

If the black stuff is graphite, graphite can be described as a dry lubricant. The calipers have to be ale to move in and out. The brackets the caliper bolts go into have a rubber seal on them and move in and out to provide the caliper movement movement. I think you are to take these apart to clean them and reassemble with the graphite lubricant to assure free movement of the calipers for the wear peroid of the new pads. When I have worked on other GM brakes, this seemed to always be an area that needed service because the calipers didn't move very well. Hope this helps.

the padding goes on the back of the pad... it is in insulator.. the calipers and the pad backs are metal this stops the brake noise from metal to metal contact... the lube is used to lubricate the channel the pad guide tabs fit into they are about 3/16 wide... unless it is a loctite product for the caliper bolts..when I do a brake job.. I use anti brake squeel product on the back high heat permitex lubriplate.. for the guide channels and loctite for the caliper bolt threads
