I'm about to swap in a ls2 timing set into my 2000 ls1. I found a modified ls2 dampener that will bolt directly to the ls1 block. Is this needed or can I run without one?
If it's ok with out it I'd still like to use it to take up some slack.
Thanks for the help
The damper is a good thing to install as it prevents the backside whip of the timing chain. I assume by modified you mean the bolt spacing is corrected. The question is whether your 2000 block is tapped to accept the damper or whether you need to drill and tap the block.
They ALL have some slack! All chains no matter what ones you use will whip on one side or the other depending if your in power or in deaceleration. The damper does help pervent the chain from excessive whipping.
Here is what the OEM LS6 damper looks like installed: Lucky for me my 02 Block was drilled from the factory:
Unless your seriously stressing the engine at high RPM extened runs,, I wouldnt worry about it if the block isnt pre drilled. As simple as it sounds, drilling those holes with the engine installed can be a ROYAL PAIN IN THE ****...
If you have the holes,, hell yes, install one. VETTENUTS is correct. Make sure the one you purchase has the LS block bolt spacing. The LS2 dampers look simular (there black) but wont work unless they have been filled drilled and modified for the right bolt hole spacing.
