Has anyone got their fuel gauge problem COMPLETELY fixed? My car has been to the dealer twice already but it is still giving out erratic readings.:mad :mad :mad I got to find a new dealer this time.
Awhile back, someone mentioned it can be fixed with a few changes in the PCM. Anyone has more details on this?
They did, or at least they claimed they did on the work receipt. Shame on them that they didn't fix it first time, but shame on me for bringing it back to the same dealer.
There is no real fix in my opinion. Unless the senders are re-designed (very doubtful, that would cost GM money  ) I see no forseeable fix. I just keep my gas filled above 1/4 tank (I rarely let it get there as is) and it is fine. Only when I am hanging at 1/4 tank does it ever do it so I just avoid it.
Everytime I fill up the tank, the gauge will only go up to 3/4 full. Then it flunctuates between 1/2 to 3/4 over the next several engine stop's & restart's. It will not give out accurate readings until the gauge gets down to about 1/8 left.
Let's see....The dealer charges GM approximately ~$800 each time I bring my car in for this fix. I brought it in twice, that's $1600 so far. And if I keep on bringing it back 8 more times, it will end up about $8000 for GM.
Let's all do this and see how long it will take before GM come out with a real fix. :mad :mad :mad
Good GOD that's a lot of dough. That's almost a damn good set of SII heads! Mine doesn't do any of the scenarios you described :(. Please let us know. That's such a shame
I was having the problem when after a fill up I would only get 3/4 full and the needle would drop to empty now and then.
When Superchips sent me a replacement PCM (because they blew mine up) the problem went away. Its been 6 months now and the needle goes to full and seems to be accurate.

Replacing the sending units appears to remedy the problem. Whether or not it will return (long term) is still a question. Some have said detergent additives in fuel cause excessive corrosion in the units. My brother is an aircraft owner and they suffer from the same potential problems, aircraft fuel systems are inspected annually very thoroughly to catch these problems as well as others.
TSB # 01-06-04-022 addresses the issue by replacing the senders. The TSB instructs the mechanic to inspect the "julian date code" on the sending unit bar codes accessible from the underside of the car where the the fuel lines connect to the tanks. If the RH code is less than "01301" or the LH code is less than "32791" replace the units.
The TSB has all the info. Crawl under and mark the sending units to be sure they have been changed when you pick up your car after service.
I was reading the threads and you are not the only one whose sending units were replaced and the erratic gages return afterwards. Fortunately my Vert has not suffered the same problems. Actually, when my Vert was in for an alignment, I asked the dealer to print out the service history and aside from adjusting the top...there has been no other dealer visits!!! I hope everything works out, I suggest you find another dealer. :yesnod:
Had the problem three times in two years (18K mikes). Had the dealer fix it two times. First time they replaced/installed MODULE KIT 3.107. Second time they replaced/installed STDR KIT 3.110, SENS KIT 3.107 and MODULE KIT 3.107. The third time, before I had the chance to go to the dealer for a repair, the battery was disconnected for header installation. The problem with the fuel gauge did not return. It’s been two months now.

If you have activated the Theft Deterrent feature of your radio, when you disconnect the battery, it will lock! You need to know your code to either disable the Theft Deterrent before you disconnect the battery or unlock it after it locks. If you don’t remember your code, let me know and I’ll send you instructions.
Good luck and let us know if it worked for you too.

Thanks for the tip. I have already disabled that feature.
I left the battery disconnected over several hours last night but it is still not working. The gas gauge still reads 3/4 full when I know for sure I have 1 full tank. :(
Oh well, got to bring it in to the dealer tomorrow.
