Last weekend I decided that I was going to tackle the job of installing Indiglo gauges in my 2000. Allwent well, the dash cluster came out without a problem. Once I got it out, I began to overlay the indiglo gauges onto the stock gauges and noticed that due to the thickness of the indiglo gauges, some of the needles were getting hung up. So, in my infinite wisdom, I decided to remove the original faces :cry!
The original faces have really small holes in them - So I decided that I had 2 options: 1-Cut the faces off, or 2-Remove the needles. I chose the later - Big mistake!!
I got the Indiglo gauges back on, and replaced the warning light bulbs with colored lights, and put the gauge needles back in "exactly" the way I found them. It looked great! After giving myself a pat on the back and making a coment to my wife about how easy the job was, I put it all back together.
Then I went for a test drive. I have a HUD, so I was able to reference its readings against the gauges. The hud is working fine, but the gauges aren't.
The tach in now reading about 500 RPM lower than actual, and the speedometer is all out of wack! When the car is off or at idle, the speedometer is pegged past 200 MPH. While driving, it stays there until about 70 MPH, then the needle moves to 150 MPH.
the good news is, you could buy a used cluster from a non HUD car and just swap all of the stuff from your original cluster onto the new one.
Question:
did you use double stick tape when you installed the indiglo gauges?
you must use a two sided tape to secure the gauges, it's about the same thickness as regular scotch tape. anything thicker or no tape at all will make the needles hang up on the indiglo face. :smash:
Thanks for the advice! Any idea where I can get a new cluster? Maybe I could swap mine out for a refurbished unit.
As for your guestion. Initially I used Scotch dougle sided tape to secure the indiglo faces. In addition to the thickness, I didn't like the way that the warning lights lined up. It really looks great with colored bulbs behind the faces.
Update: I just called my dealer and they said they could fix it - EXPENSIVE I bet. The service manager said something about turning the cluster upside down?!?!? Any ideas why? Is this all I need to do to fix the problem??
A HUD Enabled cluster will cost you about $200. Probably your best bet...
make sure it's got the connector for the projector...you can transfer the HUD controls yourself and save yourself over $100.
I had installed indiglo gauges myself. fron the procedure i printed from the forum, it said not to leave the gauges face down for an extended period of time. for what reason, i do not know. you might had left it facing down. keep us updated.
I was very vigilant not to leave the gauges face down at all. I did all the work with the gauges sitting face out (like they are in the car) or Face up??? Very odd - I am going to take it into the dealer tomorrow and bite the bullet on the outrageous labor fees. I'll let you know the outcome.
