Default C-5 Problem Need help.

New here and haven't driven the car for a while so I decide to get it out. It's a 98 C5. It is growling quite a bit when it is running so I think it is the water pump. I buy a new water pump, new idler and tensioner pulleys, install them and it is still growling. To make a long story short it looks like the belt grooves on the harmonic balancer have shifted to the rear of the balancer as I can not keep the serpentine belt from jumping two grooves off the front of the pulley. The belt grooves are about 3/16" to 1/4" back on the balancer. It looks like they should be flush with the front of the balancer to line up properly with the rest of the pulleys. Was there a problem with the harmonic balancers on these cars? If so what is the fix? Do I even want to know the fix?
Thanks,
Mike

Well now that I know what is wrong with it after reading a lot of posts here I just need to fix it.
Mike

Yes there is a fix for a wobbly, worn harmonic pulley.

It would require the steering rack to be disconnected & pulled out of the way in order to be removed & replaced.

It would require a new pulley & pulley bolt

There is a proper technique/ procedure, in it's removal & install.

Not a pleasant job for the average Joe.
Good luck.

Don't be running it any more either. right now, it's grinding it's way through the timing chain cover and the cover will have to be replaced if you let it wear too much.

Very common issue. Replace the harmonic balancer/damper, the cover seal and the damper bolt.

The OEM damper bolt is a Torque To Yield bolt. It MUST BE REPLACED with a new bolt and the procedure for torquing it back on MUST be followed verbatim or you will be replacing it over and over again.

If you want a better damper bolt that is easier to install and is a lot more robust, replace the OEM damper bolt with an ARP Damper bolt. It gets torqued to 240 ft/lbs and your done. That bolt can be reused as many time as you need to reuse it.

Once you have the damper off for replacement,, there are some no brainier up-grades that you can do that only require a few more steps.

Oil pump replacement and timing chain UP-grade replacement are pretty basic procedures. Both get weak after many miles and now is an opportune time to take care of them. Install a Melling high volume oil pump and then replace the chain with an LS2 replacement chain. The LS1/LS6 chain is weak and prone to stretch.

Some will say that now is a good time to replace the cam,, (your in there already) but,, thats another story.
