WHEW! BEEN WAITING AND WAITING AND WAITING FOR THE ALL-KNOWING ONE TO FINALLY COME OUT AND TELL US ALL HOW WONDERFUL HE IS AND HOW STUPID THE REST OF US ARE !!! THANK YOU!!!
If you had read it, I said paranoid, not stupid. I was asking a serious question. Are you so inexperienced in driving a vehicle that the lack of traction control being engaged is a scary thought?
Your post is one of the reasons forums go downhill. No need to be condescending, no need to yell either.
In your case though, perhaps I did point out your lack of intelligence (that would be me calling you stupid, yes), based on your response.

Like you would know. Oh, wait . . .
YOU ARE SO ALL KNOWING, WISE ONE
Geez. Talk about condescending. You just go enjoy your little sanctimonious, holier than thou, snap judgemental cookie.
Pot...please, step over here, I'd like you to meet Kettle...
LOL you are right. No more flame from me. I apologize to everyone who has read or participated in this thread.
Point I would like to make: Once you get a feel for the car, or any car for that matter, it's easy to push it close to the edge. The active handling nannies are set conservatively enough on C5's that it does not take a 'ham fisted move' to feel it working nor is the driver in a situation where all control would be lost without active handling turned ON.
COMP MODE turns off Traction Control (so you can spin the rear tires) BUT ACTIVE HANDLING is active (which aids you in maintaining control of the car).
If the rear end kicks out, AH will kick in and apply and release the brakes to put the car back in the direction your are telling it to go.
On my 99 you have to come to a complete stop and then hold down active handling button for a few seconds. Newer Vettes can do it while driving. Don't know if that got mentioned. And congratulations on buying the Vette!!
Recently purchased our first vet. 2000 c5 targa. Bowling green, 58,000 miles ,6 speed. Borla cat back and bbk cold air intake. Absolutely love car in mint condition and a blast to drive. Have not been able to get into compettitive driving mode, Hold button down, all it does is turn traction control on and off. Have friends with vetts try, they cant get it to come on either. Have tried in gear and out, with e brke on and off etc., still no luck. Is it possible that it does not have it, or could it have been programmed to be locked out. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks,
Jim
I have a 2000 corvette convertible (original owner) that has AH, TC, F45, but base suspension (FE4 if I remember right). As others have said, be at a complete stop then hold down the AH button for 5+ seconds, the DIC will tell you it is now in comp mode. do not turn off AH, she will get away from you. try it first in a big empty parking lot with no curbs to test it out, you'll see what it does with AH off. I'm in comp mode most of the time.
The FE4 suspension is weak, springs & sway bars. I installed C5 Z06 sway bars which made a huge difference. Have fun with your car, be safe, and just feel her out before you try anything aggressive, especially on back country roads. I used to live in northern VA, 30 minutes away from the Shenandoah mountains. That was my playground. side note, the C7 Z51 Artic White is haunting me...
Thanks for all the feedback. No JL4 code in glove box, so no active handling and no competititive driving mode. Ok so what exactly doers this mean? If there is one dissapointment I have with the car it is with the way it handles. It just does not "stick" to the road the way I thought it would. Not pushing it that hard in corners and it feels as if it wants to break loose. Could the lack of active handling be why, or maybe the tires. Have the Micelin Pilot Sport run flats, almost brand new. Also could the computer be reprogramed to add active handling and competitive driving. Sorry if these are stupid questions but this is all new.
Does the car have the original shocks and sways with plastic end links? If so, go with the 2013 Z06 shocks and the 2013 Z51 sways with metal end links. I felt like you last year when I got my car. Just had this done a few weeks ago and WOW! Active handling wont make the car handle any better!
According to GGvert, if the code JL4 appears on the list (in the glovebox) the car has Active Handling, as installed in the factory. This code does not appear (I have a 2004 C5 coupe), however there is an Active Handling button on the console and I have gotten the DIC message "Service Active Handling soon" in the past. Now I am really confused as to whether or not my vette has AH or not. Anyone help ??
Thanks

Are all of you guys so paranoid that you need the electronic nannies? I came from a 1994 Z28 with 360 RWHP and a good bit more torque than my LS6 - no traction control on that and I managed to not lose traction unless I wanted to.
This one made me laugh. You simply must baby it if you're never losing traction unless you wanted to. I've had my C5 spin the wheels enough that the TC activated dozens of times when I didn't expect to have traction problems. Road conditions change and not all surfaces have the same grip so you just can't predict how much grip you have.
I only have TC so I have no idea how well the AH works. I have played in hte snow with my truck with AH and can get it really sideways before it kicks in.
Search the forums for crash threads with the TC off if you're bored.
