Recently purchased our first vet. 2000 c5 targa. Bowling green, 58,000 miles ,6 speed. Borla cat back and bbk cold air intake. Absolutely love car in mint condition and a blast to drive. Have not been able to get into compettitive driving mode, Hold button down, all it does is turn traction control on and off. Have friends with vetts try, they cant get it to come on either. Have tried in gear and out, with e brke on and off etc., still no luck. Is it possible that it does not have it, or could it have been programmed to be locked out. Any suggestions would be helpful.
if you do not have the active handling option you do not get the comp. driving mode, look on your abs module if you have a letter m on it then you dont have ah if the letter v is there you have ah
On my 99, you have to hold the button down a few seconds, not like turning the TC on and off. You also have to be stationary.
If he had "several of his Vette owning buddies" try it, and they couldn't get it to come on either, and the problem turns out to be he wasn't holding it down long enough, he's hanging out with the wrong buddies.
Or you could look on the glove box door at the RPO codes and see if JL4 is listed. If not, it didn't come from the factory with active handling.
I just checked my RPO pic and for once I've actually got an upgrade that's worth having. I didn't even know about a competitive mode, so now I'm going to have to take her out after I finish fixing my small coolant leak and give it a try.

Lol, yes, exactly like that. I showed this to my 8 yr-old daughter so she could understand what competitive mode meant, and the smile on her face was priceless. She's turning into a true gear-head just like her daddy.

You need to teach her how much NEW TIRES cost too.
Thanks for all the feedback. No JL4 code in glove box, so no active handling and no competititive driving mode. Ok so what exactly doers this mean? If there is one dissapointment I have with the car it is with the way it handles. It just does not "stick" to the road the way I thought it would. Not pushing it that hard in corners and it feels as if it wants to break loose. Could the lack of active handling be why, or maybe the tires. Have the Micelin Pilot Sport run flats, almost brand new. Also could the computer be reprogramed to add active handling and competitive driving. Sorry if these are stupid questions but this is all new.
I don't have active handling, but I have Michelin Pilot Sport 2's (non run flats) and my C5 stock handles almost as good as my track tuned S2000 on the same tires (Different sizes on the S2000 255/40/17 front & rear)
Can't wait to try R comps on the C5
Edit: I have the Z51 suspension

I had the base suspension on my car and felt it was soft and not very responsive, plenty of front end push. I ended up going with aftermarket shocks and sway bars plus Z51 springs and to my taste the problem was solved. I did this swap while still on factory run flats and have since put new wheels and tires on with PS2's and it handles better yet. If ya have the base suspension that could be the issue.

Yeah, she doesn't quite understand what it means that 2 tires can cost $800 and more. I just checked my system out and it does turn on, but I'll have to test it out on another day. It's too hot out and I've spent too much time underneath the hood. I'm ready for a big bowl of homemade, genuine Cajun red beans and rice with a few big splashes of tabasco sauce.
When I do head out and break the tires loose a few times, just to get it out of my system, ya know, I'll snap a few pics. Her school's parking lot is pristine except for the two marks I left there last weekend, and far enough from the street that I don't have to worry about the mobile tax collector so it's a great place to try it out.

So, I recently bought my first vette, a 2000 coupe...love it. Ive been driving it with traction control ON for the past month. I don't race, just like to get up to speed limit quick now and then. A friend recommended that I drive with traction control OFF - to get a feel for how the Vette operates in this mode. I'm not the type to drive like a maniac - but is this a good idea? Is there any benefit or thrill from normal driving with TC off?

If sliding sideways unexpectedly thrills you, then there is that benefit.

You will not notice any difference with it off in normal driving. It is only active if your tires start to lose traction.
Are all of you guys so paranoid that you need the electronic nannies? I came from a 1994 Z28 with 360 RWHP and a good bit more torque than my LS6 - no traction control on that and I managed to not lose traction unless I wanted to.
Don't get me wrong, active handling is pretty neat the way it can correct a ham fisted move, but if you are engaging active handling in normal driving, you probably need some driving lessons.
Same with traction control - I can dog the crap outa my car without traction control coming on, maybe new tires are in order for those that have it come on all the time.
