Auto trans /diff
Can some one give the a run down on this set- up. Want to learn some about the trans also. It is a 1997.
Thank you,
Tom
The 4L60 is the non electronic version.
Both are decendants of the 700R4.
For the most part, the later the trans the more improvement GM made to it.
Even the best one in stock trim needs beefing for serious performance use. Parts are well supported in the aftermarket.
The 3.15 was the best ratio available for the auto trans cars. A 3.42 diff from the stick cars bolts right in.

A 3.15 was avail as an option --often called the "sport gear"
The 2.73 /A4 in my opinion was a horrible GM combination---On paper the car has the capability to run 200 MPH+ --- but realistically it would take APPRX 600 RWHP or better to do so--
Around town the car feels sluggish and way too high geared-- lugs alot--and on the freeway once it gets going above 60 MPH it's not to bad but quickly runs out of power around 125 MPH--
Even if you go to a stall conveter to get some bottom end torque --the gearing is just too tall and the converter companies won't even reccomend one --( they typically break and overheat horribly)
IF it were my car------I would drop in a 3.42 "take-off" rear end off a Z06 car--They can be found easily--I got mine for $600 and it only had 6000 miles on it !! Installed it myself but you can get it installed for another $300-400----It would make a HUGE difference in the feel of your car--and make it fun to drive !!!!
