A4 transmission trouble!
Hey all, to start, I bought a 1997 auto last saturday. The car has 121,000 miles and while I was driving it, the transmission started to slip really bad. I thought it could be low fluid etc and well yesterday I had a dealership change the filter and fluid.The mechanic said there was about 1/4 of an inch of metal shavings in the bottom of the pan and he only drained about a quart of fluid. It still slips so the advice I am looking for here is this, 1) rebuild this old transmission; 2) buy a new gm transmission; or 3) build the old transmission for better performance. I guess with the last one, I am probably never going to seek more than 500hp out the car so what would be some a nice, non budget breaking way to go?
There is another issue, the traction control light is stuck on too. Would that have anything to do with the transmission and how do i fix that?

Your transmission is on the way out!
You can rebuild your current one but have to make sure that not just the clutches are being replaces but also your pump and valvebody are checked / replaced. Then it makes perfect sense to rebuild with performance parts. Bu be sure to put matching modifications into the trans since you can create some combinations of parts that won't work very well.
500hp is a serious target for an 4l60e trans. If you don't want to gamble with a diy rebuild, I would suggest to use a reputable trans builder.
Depending on what your budget is, even done yourself you won't get a 500hp capable trans rebuild under $1500, pay double if you outsource.
