Default Convertible trunk question

I haven't looked at the latch yet, but is there any adjustment to make the trunk pop open further? When mine pops up, there is just barely enough to get my fingers on to lift it.

Yes. Do a search and look for Forum member DeeGee's write up. I believe he even made a simple device that improves the function of the spring. I just don't remember, sorry.

Good Luck

There are a couple of things to look at. Are the struts good? If so, try spraying some silicone on the latch, and finally as mentioned above, some have attached a spring type of mechanism to help pop it up. Other than that, there is no adjustment.

Oil the rods coming out of the pistons on each side, works like a charm.

I lubricated the struts and hinges. It did not pop open one bit further. I lubed the latching mechanism and it now pops open about an inch further than before.

I'll try all that, the struts seem to be fine, just doesn't open even enough to get my fingers under it at all, just the edge is all I can touch

Oiling the strut rods won't help if the struts have lost their pressurized gas charge.

Just put struts (gas springs) on mine. Here is before and after.

If the trunk falls shut the gas springs are bad.

If you do the pop-up spring mod you won't have to do the hinge/latch oiling as often.

I tried lubricating the latch and adjusting the rubber stoppers many times before I gave in and made a trunk popper.

Trunk Popper for a Vert or Z06

This is an easy mod but for those of you who prefer to buy the ready made item it sells for a very reasonable price of $15.95 from one of the Forum vendors. Unfortunately the vendor doesn’t ship overseas so I needed a DIY version:

http://www.c5trunkpopper.com/

If you want to try yourself, pick up a 7/8” compression spring from Home Depot. They retail at $3.98 for a pack of 4 springs, 2 large and 2 small. You’ll also need an end cap of the same diameter. I used a 7/8” rubber stopper ($1.76). The advantage is that it acts as a soft buffer and can be trimmed to fit.

Cut the large spring to a length of 2”. The springs are quite strong so it takes a bit of elbow grease to cut it. Tighten the radius at the cut end of the spring to give a hole to fasten the screw through.

Undo the T30 torx screw on the right hand side of the closure plate. Insert the torx screw down the barrel of the spring and retighten it in place.

Slot the bung in place. You can trim the bung to get whatever fit you prefer. With it as shown it takes a good push to close the trunk. Trimming the bung will make it easier to close..

It took 10 minutes and all the lubrication and fiddling with the lock are a thing of the past.

Just buy some new trunk struts..... I had the same problem with my FRC and the new struts fixed the problem.... If the car didn't come with a "spring" at the trunk latch, then it doesn't need one.......

Trunk. If you get truck struts, they'll actually flip the car upside down when you push the trunk release button.

Hmmm...if you bypass the interlock, the trunk could be used as a speedbrake......

A $3 fix is certainly better than buying a new set of gas lift struts!

Thanks for posting another good write-up.

I had a spring on mine. As a matter of fact I started a thread about installing the spring a few years ago. It will fix the deck lid to pop up more but it will not fix the problem of the lid not staying up when opened.

I just installed the gas springs, now I have to push the lid closed from the fully opened position and it stays up when opened.
