If you are "old school" like me, (carburetors, no electronics except lights) and you are trying to get up on the learning curve and do some basic maintenance and repair work on your C5 Corvette, all the abbreviations and codes can be head spinning. I compiled a list of abbreviations commonly used and how to access your Diagnosic Trouble Codes (DTC's) from the Driver Information Center (DIC) on your dashboard and also a list of DTC codes and what they mean. I have found it useful to print this off and keep it in my glove box.

Here goes:

How TO Display 2003 Corvette DTC Codes on the DIC

1) Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
2) Press the "reset" button (for 5 sec) to turn off any warning messages
3) Press and hold "options" button and
4) While holding "options", press "fuel" four times within a 10-Second period.

Initially, the on-board diagnostics go into the "automatic" mode, which shows each module's DTCs in a pre-set sequence as follows:

For each module, all DTCs will be displayed. If none are present in a module, you will see "no codes" on the DIC display.
There are two kinds of DTCs, "Current" and "History," designated with a letter suffix, "C" or "H". A current code indicates that the malfunction is present in the system whose module is displaying data. A history code indicates a problem existed in that module sometime in the last 40 or 50 ignition cycles. When not accompanied by a current code of the same number, it is possible it's evidence of a previous problem. Now solved, that was not removed by clearing codes. More likely is that a history code indicates an intermittent malfunction.

"Intermittent" are the most challenging DTCs. An intermittent may have happened only once, may have happened more than once but is inconsistent in its appearance or may be happening on a regular basis but not at the time the DIC is displaying codes. History codes can also be caused by a current malfunction in a system that is not Operating at the time DTCs are displayed. An example is the rear window defogger, which doesn't operate until the BCM detects engine rpm. For history codes set by a system that does not operate with the key on and engine off, a special diagnostic tool called a "scan tester is necessary to properly diagnose the malfunction.

Once the DIC has displayed all modules, the system goes into the manual mode, which allows selection of each module, using combinations of DIC buttons. The manual mode can also be entered at any time during the automatic sequence by pressing any button except "E/M". Once the DIC displays "manual diagnostics", you may select a particular module by pressing the “OPTIONS” button to go forward or the "TRIP" button to go back. Once a module is selected and a DTC is displayed, if more than one code is present; press "GAGES" To move forward to the next DTC or "FUEL" to go back. To exit the diagnostic mode at any time, press E/M". If you want to erase or "clear" codes, press "reset" (for several seconds) right after you display each error code.

Clearing a code does not repair a problem. You are simply erasing the evidence of it in the module's memory. The DTC will return if the problem persists.

Btw, in case you're not aware, you can "read" your codes while the engine is running (or while you're driving for that matter), but reading them with the engine off (key on) is going to be the most accurate way just in case there are any codes waiting to set after the end of that "run" cycle. This would be pretty rare really but still....

I periodically check codes while driving, usually while waiting at a traffic light. Gotta be careful though.

Also be aware, not all those sections/codes are in all cars. It strictly depends on how a particular car was optioned when it was built. The options are programmed in the BCM. Many are common to all cars and others just depend. For example: I do not have the LDCM, RDCM, SCM or RTD sections in my BCM so those sections (modules) do not appear when reading codes on the DIC in my car.


Btw, module 10 should read "PCM" not "PCNI" and 99 should read "HVAC" not "FIVAC" as you've indicated.

You are correct on all points --- typo's PCM and HVAC
I just tried to get all this diagnostic stuff in one place since these cars seem to have lots of issues ---- even when they haven't been mod-ed to death. I took the time to do this for myself, so I thought I would post it as well to help others.
