Need some help finding TDC on the compression stroke

Default Need some help finding TDC on the compression stroke

Im doing a head swap and currently have everything torn apart and Im ready to put the new heads back on the car. Is there any way to set the number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke without taking the timing cover off the front to look at the dots? The procedure in the service manual for properly torquing the rockers starts with the #1 at TDC on the compression stroke. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

YES! Rotate the crank while monitoring the lifters for #1 cylinder. When they are BOTH not raised ( LIFTERS ARE DOWN INTO THE LIFTER BORES),, they are on the base circle of the cam. When the the piston is fully raised and both lifters are fully in the bores (on the base circle of the cam), that cylinder it at TDC.

DO NOT forget to make ABSOLUTELY SURE that all the head bolt holes are absolutely DRY and dirt free!

If you forget and leave coolant in the holes, you will crack the block!

Yes, when both the #1 lifters are down and the #1 piston is up, your at TDC. Dont take chances with an aluminum block! Shop Vac the hell out of it!
