I have a 99 C5 Vert with 2.73 gears in it. I just purchased a 3.42 with 16k to install to add a little more jump.
I found a part inside one of the sides of the differential that I haven't a clue what it goes to. I brought the new rear end to a specialist to have it checked out, but in my excitement to see if the rear was good, I forgot the stupid part. It's just a washer of some kind with an odd design to it. See the picture. The guy is 40 miles away so I really didn't want to drive clear across town if I don't have to.
It was stuck to the side of the shaft (it had some grease on it).
I had the machine shop go over the entire differential and they stated the there was perfect wear and that there was no issues with teeth, gears, or anything else. It was well within the limits for play. He told me that even though the seals looked new, to replace them anyway.
If you have a clue what this part is for,
I'd greatly appreciate your info
I dont recognize the part, but I did the same thing. I picked up a 3.42 diff and took it in for inspection, after it checked out good I had it installed. That was not on the side of mine that I bought. But if it is needed it will be on your stock one when it comes out and they will know how to put it together. I wouldn't worry about it. They do these all the time and know what needs to go where. Just tell them your concern and they will know to look for anything strange or missing.
It captures any metal shavings that might be present in the fluid and prevents them from circulating and causing unnecessary wear; just like your oil pan has a magnetic drain plug to capture any metal found there. It's also a good idea to use an oil filter magnet for the same purpose.
Ok that makes sense. Id just take it to them or tell them to put one in. It is important to have metal shavings collected. Just tell them its the magnet.
Here are a couple of post for you so you can get a better understanding of all the stuff inside the differential. If I remember, it shows that magnet in its proper location:
Bill....That picture was worth 10,000 words!!
It's funny, I slid the magnet into that spot like it shows in the pictures, but I said NAAAH. It can't go there.
These forums are the best!!
Hey,,, while its apart,, you might consider those C5 ZO6 Improvements. The UP-GRADE is easy and the cost is excellent for what you get! Contact Gene Culley and boys for all the stuff that you need!

Hmmmm Interesting. I'm pretty good with the tools but that one may be just a bit beyond me. (probably a bit pricey, no??)
I don't race at all, other than the occasional kid with the Mustang at a stop light (once in a while..I'm too old)
SInce I'm going to swap out the differential, I figured I would replace the seals (they look new but why take a chance). What seals, gaskets, o-rings etc... should I replace while I have it apart??
Should I use factory parts or go aftermarket.
I've been told that the original oem parts were prone to leakage but have since been corrected.
I don't really race except the occasional traffic light to traffic light. Anything else I should consider while I have it apart?? I was told by a reputable shop that the rear is in remarkable shape (only has 16k miles on it).
Please advise.
In all my years of being a tech, I never played around with the differential!! Never to old to learn
The GM seals work fine. If you call Gene Culley, www.gmpartshouse.com and tell him what you are doing, he will organize ALL the parts that you need. BAM,, it DONE!
I told him I wanted all the parts for a C6 up-grade, gave him my credit card number and four days later, a BOX arrived with all the parts.

I did BOTH output shafts, the clutches, the springs, ALL the seals, and I purchased a DTE Cross shaft.
The new short shaft is so much more robust than the old one.
The only thing that I didn't get was the pinion parts. I didn't want to have to worry about setting up the rearend.
Bill.
