The 98 coupe I used to have did that when it needed freon. Try search as this problem is discussed about once a week during the summer season.

Do you have any hvac codes? Common problem is the actuator going out of range due to a broken plastic gear. Re-index them first, if that doesn't work and you still have codes it's the actuator. One for each side, change the one the code is calling out, or you can try and rebuild the gear.
