I'm thinking that the 10 year old Z06 Ti exhaust on my '01 is gradually getting louder with age.The idle tone seems to be somewhat deeper, and WOT will just about wake up the dead!
My engine is completely stock, with both pairs of factory cats in place, and it has no exhaust leaks anywhere in the system.
Does anyone know if the Ti mufflers have any type of glass matting inside the shells? The only reason I could think of, for the change in tone, is the matting is gradually blowing out.
Has anyone else noticed that their Ti's are becoming louder?
I have thought the same recently, but mine is a H/C car and I had chocked it up to not driving it enough these days. I seem to recall reading about a dissection of the mufflers from a magazine circa 2001 and there was some glass in there as I recall. I would need to find the article as I squirlled it away for future reference.
I actually find that my Magnaflows have become progressively louder over the last couple of months. Doesn't bother me because it is now just perfect. I think it is normal with most systems that contain some form of stuffing such as steel wool or fiberglass.
Will do. Have a TR 224/224 114 cam and adding heads and headers through a Z06 Ti exhaust. Should have it together next week.
Now I really want to hear what your setup sounds like! I'll be putting a cam in mine in the next couple of months. Looks like you'll be giving me a preview of what mine will sound like.
Wonder if the glass breaks up and is blown out or if it can become matted and choke off some of the flow.
Looking at Bill's cut away pics, the glass or steel matting is wrapped around both outlet tubes. Although you can't tell for sure, the outlet tubes are probably perforated, just like the inlet tube.
The old glass pack style muffles of the '60's had a single perforated tube, that was completely wrapped in glass wool matting from the inlet to the outlet. They would also become louder as they got older, and most likely from the gradual loss of the glass wool matting.
To answer your question, the glass or steel packing material is more likely to break up and get blown out of the perforated outlet tubes, rather than become matted and choke off some of the flow.
If the later were the case, they would probably become quieter, rather than louder as they age.
