Default transmission slop / clunk

Manual trans slop / freeplay going in reverse or forward from a dead stop....car in question is a 2004 C5 six speed with 17,000 miles....New owner of this C5..asking if slop in the trans is normal. Indications are with car in gear(not running) and you rock the rear wheel (either side) back and forth, I get this clunking sound which appears to be coming from the transmission. I first noticed this when you back-up the car from a dead stop and it "clunks' before moving. Same happens in first gear from a dead stop. I checked all bolt connections in the undercarrage and all is normal...half shafts are tight and rock together with the wheel with no slop... any comments? Is this just a normal C5 issue..??

There is a good bit of lost motion in all of the splined joints and between the rear and transmission gears. So,,,,,, yes,,,, there will be some lost motion. Without being there or seeing it, its difficult to determine if it’s more than normal. If there wasn’t any clearance between the sliding parts, they would have significant wear issues when they expanded when HOT.

Here is something that you can do that will give you the creeps.
If you have a MN6/MN12, start the engine. Put the trans in neutral, let out the clutch and turn OFF the ignition. Listen to the drivetrain!!!

Its perfectly normal by the way!!

That’s the lost motion in the clutch, torque tube and tranny making noise as the engine coast down to a stop. If you press in the clutch, it will not make that noise..

Thanks Bill...I did that once when I first got the car and it was scary !! Its hard to believe that the GM engineers couldn't work that out of the drivetrain by the 2004 model....all and all, its still a Chevy.

I had this problem. It is an easy fix. The problem is that there is a spline shaft on each rear output shaft at both rear wheels. If you take off the center cap of your wheels you will see a large nut. That has to be re torqued.

Thanks !!! great post....it sounds exaclly what i have. What throws me is I marked the rear output shafts with a chalk line and kept an eye on the movement when I rocked the rear wheels back/forth. I did not see any slop with the shaft/wheel movement. However, I'm going to give it a try and report back. Hope it fiix's it.

Default touque the nut...cure the problrm

Well Vette1 ..I owe you a beer. I did what you reconmended and it fixed the problem..unbelievable!! My 2004 is like driving a new car. I would advise all C5 owners to re-torque the half shaft nuts>I really made a huge difference
