I've got a 2000 Coupe with about 68,000 on it and I'm pretty sure the brakes are factory originals. I'm not experiencing any brake problems but I've noticed some mild pedal feedback and my right rear rotor has some light grooving so I may go ahead and just do the brakes. I normally only do street driving but I have thought about doing an auto-cross especially at Eureka Springs this year, so here's the deal....Has anyone heard about either "E-Line" or "ABT- Advanced Braking Technology" brakes?
Would just the standard brake package be OK for an occasional auto-cross?
I'm not wanting, nor can I spend mega-thousands like other foks on brakes
I'd stick with the cheapest rotors you can get at an auto parts place like Napa. Upgrade your pads. Maybe replace your brake lines--even OEM lines are okay. I don't know what's the recommended brake fluid nowadays. Ford had, and might still have, an inexpensive brake fluid for their big vans that worked very well... If you get a little more serious, you could rebuild your calipers and use DRM's steel pistons.
Upgrading your tires will actually allow you to take advantage of your brakes, but that can be expensive, especially since you'll probably want a set of dedicated autocross wheels. They can be used factory wheels. They will allow you to wear your street and autocross tires where they count, and not wear them out where it doesn't. It's a bit expensive up front, but will save you money eventually.
