Just got back from getting the Blackwing put on...luv it...now what about this maf screen deal....97 auto here, how would I go about cutting this out...is it tough to do etc??? any advice will help, thanks
I have a 2002, which is a press fit into the late model composite one-piece MAF. As I understand it, on the earlier models the screen will be easily removed if you take the ends off the MAF.
Just take off the air intake stuff, filter, plastic, etc. Then you can see directly into your MAF, I took a steak knife and just poked it until in edge was made, and popped it out. Its easy. If you wreck something, its just a good excuse to get a HP one. :yesnod:
A year or two ago on the forum, some people that did it dynoed afterwards, most showed little or no gain -2 to 6hp and some had tunning problems that they had to buy the stock part again. So considering the chance of a problem and little gain, most have just left theres in. The maf ends work on on 97-98, most 99+ owners have problems with them. They generally cause a lean condition, good on 97-98s that came rich from the factory, but not good on 99+s that did't.
Removed my screen and both air dividers from the MAF ends on my 99 C5. Then blended everyting smooth, INCLUDING the rough edges left by the screen. This made my LTFT's about 6% lean, so I adjusted for it with LS1-Edit. Now everything runs great. If you can't adjust for the lean condition you will create, think twice about doing it.
