Default Heads

I ASKED A SIMILAR QUESTION RECENTLY. NASSYBLUE RESPONDED WITH:

Very little.

1) 799's are rest assured not to have the infamous valve springs that fail

2) the LS6 version of the 243's come with sodium filled valves. These tend to be worth more $$.

HOWEVER, THE SODIUM FILLED VALVES CAME ON 2002 AND LATER APPARENTLY.

SO, THE 799'S HAVE BETTER SPRINGS BUT 243'S HAVE BETTER VALVES (2002 ONWARD). AS FOR PRICE, I AM NOT SURE.

Sodium filled valves where unique to the LS6. The 243 heads that came on the later LS2 do not have them.
The LS6 243 heads are therefore more expensive. I just picked up a set of LS2 243 heads for 400. The valves are not worth the 700-800 people are asking for un-rebuild LS6 style 243's.
Just go for a set of 799's or LS2 243's for around that price and throw some new springs on and deck the surface.
Id say that price is good if they are a fresh rebuilt set and the port is a good one. It depends on who did the port.

They will be an upgrade over the LS1 heads either way. But there is a special technique to porting these already good heads. There is such a thing as hurting performance if they are over done.

I guess its a 50/50 chance then unless he is sending them to a well known machine shop who has a track record of producing good work. i need to ask him who is doing the porting and if he gets pissy then i just wont buy them. i want to do it right the first time or as right as i can get it anyway. Thank you for your input i really appreciate your opinion. helps me out alot!!

Very true. If he did them I'd pass for sure. I'd ask for a flow sheet. If there is no flow sheet, good chance it was not professionally done.

Just a straight swap will do about 10whp. With a cam it will be worth more like 25-30whp of the power increase.

if your doing all that work maybe a set of PP 243 heads would be a better option.

799 heads do not flow much more than stock 241 heads if at all.

243 heads are much better. Spring failures are higher on forum participants then in real life. PPL just complain. Stock springs are only good for a cam lift of about .550.

Putting on some better springs, comp 918s, or Pac 2018 springs right a way is a good thing. but NOT double springs. Too much seat pressure for the light wt values. Lt wt values are for high rpm use above 6500 rpms.

Better springs will get you to a cam lift of .600 which is more then enough for 243 heads. 243 heads max flow out about a cam lift of .580 so no reel need to have a cam lift above that.

PP 243 heads will flow quite will up to around .600 maybe a bit more too.

Good Luck
