OK, my LS1 developed a nasty engine ping. Dealer finally agreed to do an engine de-carb. Before I left the car I made certain the service writter and manager would see to it the de-carb would be performed to the procedure I thought it should be done to. Now I'm trying to find out what was actually done to the engine. I noticed immediately the oil has not been changed, it's dark and smells bad, the service writter said the mechanic said GM would not pay for an oil change. I have no idea what else was really done, the service manager is supposed to find out and let me know. I'm really pissed.
Does anyone know the GM bulliten number for de-carb's?
Has pnyone else had to deal with engine ping? If so what was the solution?
For one thing, there have been PCM software updates, one fairly recently for engine knock (among other things) which I had uploaded to my 2002. Your dealer may not be aware of these so you should inform him. The downside of the update is that it dials in some timing retard which hits A4's with a performance drain. MN6's don't generally notice the change.
Be aware that once flashed up to the new code, there's no going back.
Have you tried switching gasoline. I had some serious ping, I was even using premium fuel. I switched to Chevron 93 and that cured it on the first tank.
I had pinging with my 99 WS6 (LS1, A4). I had pinging with my 00 C5 (A4).
I tried everything. Even different gas station and brand trick. Still didn't cure it. The only thing that reduced it for me was Steve Cole's programming. I said reduced and not eliminate.

Had it done and mine still pings, I have a Blackwing and that might be affecting my A/F mixture. I need an autotap to find out.
If you know someone with a gms 5% rich maf try it. Had unreal audible knock On a A4 2001 w/powerloader. Purchased a used one on the forum and have zero knock retard. checked with tech 2. detonation will destroy your engine. Good luck.
Yes, brand of gasoline doesn't fix it. More of a mystery is why the ping is severe sometimes and mild other times. Shutting down and restarting the engine often is enough to change the problem a lot. Strange.
