Default Oil pump porting *service*?

I see plenty of new ported LS6 pumps, does anybody port/rebuild used ones?

never heard of it. the pumps dont cost a lot - probably not enough margin there to justify it as a service by itself.

Makes sense, I agree. The ported OEM pumps and aftermarket cost about the same, is there any reason to go with one over the other?

cant answer that with my experience, but when asking every question under the sun for my build, people consistently came back to using Melling pumps. take that for what it's worth.

Likely not a used one. However, there are some DIY's around if you are so inclined as the pump is relatively simple but the parts must be correctly re-assembled, i.e., there is an up and down to the parts.

There's a how to port your own. Stock pumps stagnate in flow around 6300RPM IIRC. I haven't seen any data indicating that porting a stock pump staves that off or not. I'd really like to keep stock volume if it didn't puff out at high RPMs, the Mellings scare me a little because I think they all flow a little more than OEM. I bumped my rev limiter to 6900 for a few short straights that I boinked the stock limiter on and that ends up being a decent amount of time above 6300, enough for me to add up the ~5k it'd be to replace a blowed up LS6.

Thanks for the link. Yeah, I share this concern about the Melling. I have heard they can dry out at high revs and start aerating the oil, as well as pushing it all up under the valve covers.

When you say the stocker stagnates...does that mean it's pumping the same amount from 6300-6900? And is that no longer keeping up, or is ok for short stays above 6300?

Not sure I will rev that high very much, at least not unless I start regularly tracking the car. This is a street/strip build with ambitions to occasionally head to Summit Point, if I can afford to.

Oil flatlines at that RPM, but I don't know if that's good or bad. I'm personally scared by what I don't know. I really don't like the answer of "well Joe tried it and he hasn't blown up yet". I much prefer quantitative data. There is a thread floating around with a chart that shows the flow of a stock LS pump vs 2 Mellings.

Running a used oil pump is comparable to using a used condom. It can be done but probably not a good idea.
