I just pulled the valve covers and found no issues. Everything looks perfect. The ticking noise must be coming from something else.

I just changed to oil out to see if that would help. I doubt I'd be able to capture the noise on video due to the exhaust being so loud. The ticking is really faint and I only hear it about 2K rpm. I'm wondering now if it isn't some piston slap. Took the car out today and after getting a mile down the road the ticking was gone. Parked the car at a car show for ~2 hours and did not hear it at all on the 2 mile ride back home. Maybe the new oil helped, idk. Just gonna have to drive it and see if it comes back or something actually breaks.

Just curious, what kind of oil did you put in when you changed it? My '01 has had Mobil1 in it since day 1, except once, when I got 6 qts. of Pennzoil Platinum very inexpensively. Ran the Pennzoil for one summer of driving, and although I didn't do any scientific measuring, I swear the little "ticking" noises that the car normally makes went away. The following summer (last year), I had Mobil1 back in it, and the usual noises returned....

My car ticked bad several years ago and it went away. I spoke to several including Terry Dyson. We think it was carbon build up on the pistons that was cause some rocking. Has never done it again since.

I just replaced it with Mobil 1. The prior change I believe I used the newer Castrol titanium.

You hit the nail right on the head! People are too quick to blame a part. It is all about using the right combination and setting it up correctly. For the high open spring pressures and aggressive ramp rates, I use Yella Terra's Platinum series rockers and have had no issues. Great comment sabastian458!

Looks like I'm next... these have 5-6k miles on them, I have AFR 205 heads and an AFR 6016 cam. I sent an email to Jim at Yella Terra last night hopefully I'll get a response soon.

I see the 5-6 thou for mileage that's around the same as when I lost one.
But how old is this set?

How much did you shim? I have the same cam/heads and needed 0.125" shims to center the wipe pattern. Also, I found that 3/8" double taper pushrods straightened out some valve train instability I had with the straight 5/16" pushrods.

That sux. I've got to pull mine apart again. My ticking noise is back again. I think I tore up a cam lobe or something. Car developed an intermittent miss the last time I drove it and the noise became much more consistent and a bit louder. Man it's been a crappy week!!

Yeah* those are the old style. Jim will take care of you, he has been a great guy.

I had to use the shims/washers provided and that centered my wipe. When I finish my new build I will run thicker pushrods too.

I used the shims provided with the rockers, I didn't measure them but the wipe was centered when everything was assembled.

Looks exactly like my failure, roughly the same miles, also AFR heads with the upgraded springs.
looking closely with a high power microscope, it was clear the end of the rocker had cracked first, then slowly cracked more and more until it finally failed completely. I was at 1500 rpm just putting down the street....luckily close to home.

The engine is real pissed off when the exh rocker busts! Holy cow, mine sounded like a rod was about to exit.....

I never had an issue with the YTs in my LS6 but I didnt take a chance on my LS3 and went with Comp Cam updated stockers. Did them myself quite easily. Sorry for those who have had bad luck with these.

Ron,

I don't recall, did you replace with the new YT rockers (newest design)? If you did, any issues with valve train control?

I am thinking of upgrading to the new design in the spring even though I have not had any problems with mine to date.

Ounce of prevention approach

Just wanted to give an update, Jim from Yella Terra sent me a whole new set of the revised version and car is up and running again. He was great through the whole ordeal, good to see a company stand behind their products!

i can't say the same think about my dealing with them...i bought a set of the rockers a few years ago and no failure yet but do i really need to live with the what if!!...asked jim if they would swap out for a new set just to protect a 8000$ build and he said no way cause i don't have my bill anymore...what a great answer !!!! I'm supposed to hold on to every piece of paper forever!!! looking for a replacement set and i really don't think its gonna be from them...i wish they would really stand up and do something....nobody had and problem taking my money but now nobody wants to help
