Hey guys, I am having issues that I think is related to the security system but I'm not sure. My 02 ls1 sometimes wont start and it locks up the steering column, and sometimes it starts but the security light stays on. It never gives me any codes or anything on the display. I have done some searching online and stumbled on bill curlee's post about the key switch having bad contacts. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ch-repair.html
I have also seen people that cut the orange wire in the steering column to solder in resistors bypassing the security feature that recognizes the key in the ignition. Are these places I should start checking or does anybody have any better suggestions.
Thanks, Jason
ok I cleared all the codes and got the car to not start and then i got it to start and it had the security light stay on and in both senarios I got a bcm code b2723.
The code is for the theft deterrent system. I wouldnt go cutting any wires, mess with the wrong one and boom your airbag deploys and you risk hurting yourself.
I would do some research on that code... There is tons of info out there regarding on what has to be done and what others have had to do to fix it. I had a similar problem with my camaro. Ended up having the ignition lock and the car wouldnt start anymore as the theft system thought it was being stolen. Ended up having to have the entire ignition replaced with a set of new keys to fix it.
Here is another corvette user that had the same issue. here is what he had to do as the car wouldnt crank over anymore. He explained the same problems you did and it just got worse.
Thanks to all for your input - unfortunately for my bank account I had to have the ignition switch replaced. Seem there was a bad sensor (couldn't read key) and a loose connection in the lock/tumbler set.
Part was about $150 - labor was $250!! Oh well, she starts and runs great, security system works fine and, I learned alot.
Thanks for the link, and I do know which wire is for the airbags (its the yellow one) so I will make sure not to touch that one. I do think the problem is somewhere in the tumbler or the ignition switch, I'm just not sure which would be more likely to fix it. But maybe I will just start with taking the switch apart and cleaning it just for good measure.
Hey thanks Vette for the help. I did have a spare key and it does the same thing with both keys, in fact, it doesn't happen more or less with either key. I will try your suggestions and repost the outcome.
Ok I tried cleaning the key and took the ignition switch out and cleaned the contacts and i still does the same thing. So it seem like I am going to need to replace the ignition cylinder. Thanks for all the help.
