At what point should I consider rings to be seated?? Is one quart of oil in 2000 miles something to be concerned over?? I had original oil dumped at 1000 miles and now have about 3500 miles on it. Does it need more time or is it pretty much common?? It was broken in as per the book hasn`t seen redline more than a couple of times since. Also it seems to have a bit of piston slap when cold.....common also?? :chevy :chevy
Piston slap is fairly normal on these cars. I would not be concerned about it as long as it goes away after warm-up.
Oil consumption seems to vary among owners.. It depends on driving habits.
I would just monitor it until you get some more miles on the meter.
It takes a several thousand miles for these engines to fully break in.
Enjoy your ride.

2002's aren't supposed to have oil consumption/piston slap problems! These afflications were allegedly fixed in the 2002 models with a ring change and a piston change. I would give the car 5k miles to break in before coming to any radical conclusions. If your car were a 2001 I would say all this is normal, but for a 2002 this doesn't sound quite right...especially the piston slap.
Well gang which is it??? It was my understanding the engine woes were cured for 2002 as well. love the car it seems to get stronger every day.I think it needs a good road trip.......
Thanks
Mike
A good road trip would be wise in any event. I'm curious as to what's going on with your car though...as my 2001 is on the schedule to have it's rings upated to 2002 pieces in a few weeks....not much point if the results are more or less the same.
New pistons went in in spring 01. For the LS-1, new rings were scheduled to be put in 3rd week of production so your car should have both. My 02 doesn't seem to use any oil at all. I did pull the plugs and look in the cylinders with a boroscope and the hone marks were still very evident. I don't think you will have full break-in until around 7K miles.
