I think the dipstick's tube was also changed to go along with the dipstick. Probably gives the same oil level reading if the right stick & tube pair is used.

I believe it has to do with the exhaust manifold differences among different year models and the tube's mounting-tab location.
The early LS engine dipstick runs straight up thru the area between cylinders 4 & 6 and mounts on the exhaust manifold (via a small metal boss and a small bracket.
The 2001+ runs up in between cyl 2 &4 and mounts directly to the head.
The tubes are longer on the 2001+ dipsticks thus requiring longer sticks. Trust me..
