There have been several post on this very issue. I just applied black RTV to mine, covered the fller neck opening with celephane, installed the cap and let it cure. After it cured,, remove the cap, removed the celephane and BAM,,,, NO MORE LEAKS. I am still looking for the O ring specs also so that I can replace the O ring.
I,,, like you,, cant see wasting a perfectly good cap for a damn 50 cent O ring.

OK, I did read this but was hoping someone found an O-ring. I will try your RTV idea, worst that can happen is I will still need to get a new cap.
I'm guessing the dealership doesn't have any? If I can remove mine, I should be able to tell what size and material it is. Buna N and Nitrile are generally resistant to gasolene. Viton is a step above in terms of resistance and cost. Of course, if it's not shaped like an o-ring, then it is probably custom-designed.
I replaced mine with the recommended GM cap. The replacement had a seal that is not shapped like an o-ring (rectangular cross section and molded on). I tried to remiove the o-ring shapped seal from the old cap and could not get it off without tearing/destroying it. It appeared to be molded on. From my experience I suspect it is not a standard o-ring.
