Default BMPV/ECBM Mounting Question

Hi all,

I'm babysitting an '02 for a friend while he is deployed in the Middle east. I'm trying to do some work on it for him while he is gone. Its throwing a DTC of C1214 i.e. the ABS/TCS/AH are out.

I've gone through and started checking the grounds and connectors which seem ok. When inspecting the ECMB I noticed that the whole BMPV/EBCM assembly seemed to be "free floating" and I could move it around as though it wasn't mounted. I'm guessing that this isn't right.

Reaching around the bracket I could feel only one mounting hole, it was on the bottom and had no bolt.

I'm guessing that all the rattling around from not being mounted probably screwed up the relay's or other circuitry inside. I'm going to try swapping it with a rebuilt one.

I'd love if someone could please confirm for me that yes there is indeed a mounting bolt on the bottom to secure it to the bracket. Is that the only one? or are there others that I haven't found.

Also if anyone knows the part number or how I could best get a replacement for this bolt that would be really great.

Thanks

The unit is retained in a bracket by TWO bolts:

The 1214 DTC is the code for a defective power relay. You can either:

OPen up the EBTCM and repair/replace the relay your self (takes some fancy prying and then solder work)

OR

Send the EBTCM to one of the people who specialize in replacing that relay and or repairing the circuit board:

The frame is mounted to the Front K Member neer the driver side bolt for the steering rack.

Bill,

Thanks for answering my post. I've only been lurking on this forum for a few days but I have learned a ton from your other posts already.

Since its not throwing anything but the 1214 I'm going to send it off to absfixer.

I saw on another thread though that I can measure the resistance between the BMPV motor pins and the motor housing to determine if the BMPV is bad as well. Is there any truth to this when the only code is a 1214?

Thanks
John

Yes, the motor windings can short to the case which means they can be shorted through some resistance to ground which then causes the voltage at the relay to drop and trigger the C1214 code. The excess current caused by the short can also burn the relay contacts which means the relay could be damaged. The diagnostic for C1214 instructs the technician to check to see if the windings are shorted to the case. Any resistance less than infinity means the BPMV and the EBCM both have to be replaced. There is no DIY repair for the BPMV so it has to be replaced with a known good or new module.

Another cause of the same issue is MOTOR STALL (stuck) When the motor armature does not turn or turns with extra resistance, it draws too much current and it throws a DTC.

There are several post that explain how to exercise the motor to free it up.

Well here is something strange.

It looks like the top parts of the bracket used to secure the BMPV from the sides - are sheered off. This is why I couldn't find where it would bolt other than the bottom. This also means that the whole BMPV kind of sits on top of the wires that that go from the BMPV to the bottom connector of the EBCM.

Not sure what the long term ramifications of leaving it that way are but to fix it I would have to get a new bracket and pull the BMPV out and remount everything. That's a little above my my skill level since it involves bleeding and adjusting the ABS and brakes.

Good news is I checked the resistance between the BMPV motor case and the leads and it came up over limit. Next I'll look into the stuck motor .

Thanks Bill and Bill
