Default Tpm?

Newbie question:
I just got into the C5 world with a 2001 base model that has Z06 wheels added by a previous owner. Not surprisingly for a 10+ year old car, the TPMs on all tires are not functioning. I don't know, however, if they're not registering because the batteries are out, or if I don't have the TPMs installed to begin with.

I'd like to get them back up and running, but I don't know if I need the units themselves, or if I need to give the battery swap a try. Is there any way to tell if the TPMs are there without taking the tires off the rims?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Just look at the valve stems. Normal valve stems = no TPM sensors, Metal stems with a nut on them = TPMS.

The above info about valve stems is correct but there are tools that can measure the strenght of the batteries from outside the tire. Just an FYI

What tool would that be?

I agree with the others that looking at the valve stem can determine if the TPMS are there or not. (Well, 99% anyway. There are a few metal valve stems such as my factory '85 Corvette, but they are not very common.)

If it does have them, I would try retraining them before you take them out for a new battery or replacement. They may not be registering because they are not trained to the car. Training can be done through the DIC and holding a magnet next to the TPMS one wheel at time.

Good Luck.

Our shop uses the Snap On TMPS2. There are others that are cheaper that will tell you if the battery has failed also.

Thanks for the pics. Guess I'll be shopping for some TPMs next tire change.

I understand from the link that the style changed in 2001. Since I have a 2001 model, how do I tell which TPM will work with my car?

The 2001 models use the newer less expensive style that work on all models from 2001 to 2004.

From gmpartshouse.com

25773946 – sensor – $40.60 each
15234846 – nuts – $3.95 each

You should have the later TPMs. There may be an easier way but if you look at the door lock module and check the part number, it'll identify the type.

97-00 - Remote control door lock receiver - 10422621
01-04 - Remote Control Door Lock Receiver - 10312535

DeeGee - many thanks! I have the C21xx malfunction codes for all four tires currently.

I'm going to run by the dealer today and see if I can get a repair history on the car (I want to make sure the column lock has been addressed). While I'm there, I'll see if they have that info in their system, too.
