Service abs / traction control ??
I am looking at a 2001 vert w/ 30000 miles. The car is mint inside and out and is loaded. It has the original tires which will cost me about $1000 and when I drove it the display said SERVICE ABS then SERVICE
TRACTION CONTROL ?. The owner said that it is a bad module causing both of these problems and that the module cost $550-$750. Does this story sound right and if so is this module available, what is involved replacing it? The guy is asking $21000 and most comparable cars in my area are $23-26k ! What do the forum experts say ? I am a C3 guy and the whole code/ computer electrical thing is starting to worry me!
yeah that is correct do a search on here you can send the module in for 150$ to get fixed. Both codes are from the same issue... There is also a how to so you can prob fix it yourself...
Allot of C5's display that message from time to time and go away once the car is turned off. Mine does it maybe one out of 50 start ups. It doesn't make a difference in the drivability of the car from what I have experienced and I am used to it happening now and then, so I do not bother getting it fixed. But if it always occurs in that one, it should probably be dealt with.

Okay it shows the C1214 code and had to many others to write down. I am afraid that if I buy this car it may not pass emissions and w/ winter storms due any time now I may not have time for fixes and trips back for re-testing. I thought of just doing winter storage w/ out registering it but then I couldn't insure it at least not conventionally. I am thinking pass but this vette is near show condition and is a steal at the winter price !

It is really a pretty simple job, just a bit awkward getting to the bolts. It takes about 20 minutes to remove the EBCM. You ship it off to ABS fixer, and get it back about a week later and do everything in reverse. You can even drive the car with the module removed, as I did.
If you can confirm via codes that this is the issue, I would buy it and negotiate a big discount. It is really an easy fix and it might drop the asking price by $2K or so.

Grimlock, I'm not to worried about the C1214 error but now per my last post after running the codes I'm worried about the emissions battle, see my last post ! You are in California and may not realize that many nice cars are forced into winter storage about now and if you have outstanding emissions issues you can not just tell the RMV to wait for spring !

Codes can be set for many reasons, some can be ignored or explained for simple reasons. Simply replacing the battery can often set codes. The traction control codes would not be a problem in NC but not sure about Calif. If the service engine light is not on emissions may not be a problem.
i had mine come on few months ago. it turned out somehow the wires were ripped that go into the wheel hub on the rear. be carefully your tc will now be off.
I would worry about the C1214. If the EBCM can't be repaired its a very expensive fix for a new module, typically $1500+. The good news is a C1214 is normally fixable through absfixer.com for about $150. Its easy to remove the module and you can drive the car with it removed (but no ABS during that time). Maybe you should have a caveat to the sale to make sure its repairable.
I'm not sure why you're worried that it wouldn't pass the emissions test. Are there other codes? C1214 doesn't affect the emissions test.
What you need to do is clear out the codes, drive the car and see which reset. A history code has cleared and the fault is no longer present. You need to worry about a "C" code which means a current problem. You should see something like C1214HC or C1214H.
