After you do it the first time pulling the manifold is really easy. Pull it, do what needs to be done, clean things up a bit and put it back together. If something else under there breaks later pull it again and fix it... It'll go much faster next time. I wouldn't put money into preventatively replacing perfectly good parts when it's really easy to get to them later.
There are a couple of strips of foam rubber at the front and back under the manifold, to deter dirt and water intrusion. They will probably be nasty. You can find the exact same stuff in computer equipment packaging (monitors, etc.) If you can find a pretty large piece in the dumpster behind the electronics store, cut it to fit the entire underside of the manifold - keeps water and dirt out better, protects wires, and helps heat-insulate the manifold (good for at least 10 bench-race ponies).

If you buy the FEL-PRO brand intake gasket set, those new pieces of foam are included in the kit. Definately get a new intake manifold gasket kit. The FEL-PRO kit is only ~ $13 at Autozone (p/n: VS50504R).
Seal up the knock sensor rubber plugs with RTV. There is a TSB out there about it to prevent water from getting down in the knock sensors if you wash the motor.
I really was impressed with the helpful spirit and all the constructive aid I was offered.
I will be following the explanations carefully, so I greatly appreciate and care taken presenting the information.
As for the heads and cam, I only wish the car was far enough along to consider anything more than putting out the next fire
Still it's a lot of fun, almost everyday is a fun ride with the top down , and the roads around here are in reasonably good shape. If I could only get some of these yeahoos to stay off the streets..........
just wondering how you made out. i have just replaced my oil sensor and have the intake off my 2000. i cleaned up the manifold some, it had a lot of oily residue. maybe not wet but not very clean. did you lengthen the little vacuum line and if so, where did you get the parts? there is an oreilly auto parts on 190th that i have been going to lately, maybe they have it.
